Mercedes-AMG is making a bespoke fully electric SUV

Throughout its 57-year history, Mercedes-AMG has only developed a handful of bespoke, AMG-only models. There was the AMG GT, the SL, SLS, and of course the Mercedes-AMG One – all of them some form of sports car with performance in mind. So colour us surprised when they say they’ll be making a bespoke Mercedes-AMG SUV entirely in-house, and an electric one at that.

In fact, the upcoming Mercedes-AMG SUV will only be the sixth bespoke model from the German carmaker’s performance division. But when even Ferrari is making an SUV (sorry, a “Ferrari Utility Vehicle”), you kind of just have to. Of course, you don’t want to scare away your core customer base, so you give it the codename “Born in Affalterbach”… yes, we’re not joking.

The Mercedes-AMG EQE SUV is not a bespoke AMG model

The upcoming high-performance Mercedes-AMG SUV will be built on the AMG.EA platform, making it the second model in its line-up to do so. The first has not been unveiled yet, either, though that’s likely a fully-electric GT four-door based on the prototype photos the company has shared so far.

No details on the Mercedes-AMG electric SUV has been shared so far, aside from the fact that its development vehicles are set to undergo initial test drives this winter, but since it’s built on the AMG.EA platform, that means it’ll be powered by the “ultra-high performance axial flux motors” from British firm Yasa, which Mercedes has acquired back in 2021.

“SUVs have been among our most popular models for many years,” says Mercedes-AMG Chairman and head of the G-Class and Maybach divisions, Michael Schiebe. “With the ‘Born in Affalterbach’ SUV, we are responding to this trend by offering our customers a truly captivating high-performance off-roader based on the AMG.EA platform.”

Schiebe adds, “Our new high-performance architecture follows a clear philosophy: ‘AMG First, EV Second’. This means that the vehicles not only excel as electric vehicles but also embody the core AMG qualities of emotion and performance.”
