All-new Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 & 63 S E Performance Coupe debut: Up to 680hp, 1020Nm

After the global debut of the all-new Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe back in March this year, and just slightly over a month after the Mercedes-AMG GLC SUV made its debut, the luxury carmaker has now introduced to the world its performance counterpart – the all-new Mercedes-AMG GLC Coupe. The performance coupe SUV is offered in two variants, namely the Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 4MATIC Coupe, and for the first time ever, the Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S E Performance Coupe.

On the outside, the all-new Mercedes-AMG GLC Coupe is fitted with the brand’s Multi-beam LED headlights. At the back are also two double tailpipes to show its performance identity.

Naturally, the performance coupe SUV also sports a series of AMG-specific equipment. This includes the AMG-specific radiator grille, as well as a jet wing-like AMG front apron which features large air inlets, vertical fins, and additional flics. Wheels-wise, the all-new Mercedes-AMG GLC Coupe can be opted for with either 19, 20-or 21-inch wheel sizes, depending on the variant and option chosen.

Like the Mercedes-AMG GLC SUV, the GLC 63 S E Performance Coupe is also available with the exclusive Edition 1 for one year from its market launch. This exclusive edition comes with two exterior colour options – graphite grey magno and high-tech silver magno.

It is also fitted with matt black 21-inch AMG forged wheels, along with yellow-painted AMG brake callipers. Inside, you get a black and yellow interior featuring black Nappa leather upholstery with yellow stitching and “Edition 1” logos on the front headrests.

Powering the Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 4MATIC Coupe is a 48V mild hybrid (MHEV) system. The system features the brand’s M139l 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine with an electric exhaust gas turbocharger, which has been built according to the carmaker’s “One Man, One Engine” principle.

Mercedes says this system is a direct derivative of the technology successfully used by the Mercedes-AMG F1 Team in the premier class motorsport for many years. Paired with the AMG Speedshift MCT 9G transmission with a wet starting clutch, the GLC 43 puts out a total of 421 hp and 500 Nm.

The belt-driven starter generator (RSG) is also able to provide a short-term boost of 14 hp and 150 Nm. With power sent to all four wheels via the brand’s 4MATIC all-wheel drive (AWD) system, which can be set to provide rear-biased torque distribution (39% front, 61% rear), the century sprint can be done in just 4.8 seconds. Its top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h.

The more powerful Mercedes-AMG 63 S E Performance Coupe on the other hand is powered by a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) system, featuring the same M139l engine, but with a larger turbocharger. This results in the engine itself capable of producing 476 hp at 6,725 rpm, making it the world’s most powerful series-produced 4-cylinder engine.

When paired with the same AMG Speedshift MCT 9G transmission, an electric motor and a 6.1 kWh battery, its system output is rated at 680 hp, while its maximum system torque is rated at a whopping 1,020 Nm. Power is delivered to all four wheels via the 4MATIC+ AWD system, enabling the performance coupe SUV to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.5 seconds, and achieve an electronically limited top speed of 275 km/h.

The electric motor also allows the Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S E Performance Coupe to have an all-electric range of 12 km. Charging the 6.1 kWh battery can be done using the on-board 3.7 kW AC charger.

The Mercedes-AMG GLC Coupe also come with other standard equipment, including the rear-axle steering, as well as the AMG Ride Control suspension with adaptive damping.

Inside, the all-new Mercedes-AMG GLC Coupe is fitted with AMG seats wrapped in Artico man-made leather, along with Microcut AMG microfiber. The MBUX infotainment system also comes with various AMG-specific displays and functions. This includes the independent displays in the instrument cluster, as well as the portrait-oriented central display.

The GLC 43 gets a flat-bottomed AMG Performance steering wheel wrapped in Nappa leather, while the higher-end GLC 63 S gets an additional Microcut microfiber combination. Like other modern AMG models, the all-new Mercedes-AMG GLC Coupe also sports the round AMG steering wheel buttons. This feature enables drivers to tweak the performance coupe SUV’s driving dynamics functions along with the AMG Dynamic Select driving program.
