Russia’s Volga is making a comeback with rebadged Geely models, assembled in a former VW plant

Volga, a Russian carmaker, was a cultural icon of the Soviet Union, with cars produced under the nameplate for over 50 years before its discontinuation in 2010. After a decade of dormancy, the marque is returning to the Russian automotive scene. However, rather than a line-up of in-house models, the modern Volga fleet will consist of rebadged Geelys, as reported by Carscoops.

The Volga K50 and the Volga C50 are the first two cars to lead the comeback. These are rebadged versions of the Geely Monjaro SUV and the Geely Preface sedan. The latter is perhaps best known locally as a potential candidate for a new Proton Perdana after Geely acquired a stake in Proton operations.

Volga K50

While this isn’t Volga’s first attempt at a comeback, reports from 2024 suggested the company planned a revival with three models based on Changan underpinnings, a project that ultimately fell through.

While both new models largely resemble their Chinese counterparts, Volga has added unique touches to the exterior, including the brand’s specific wordmark and emblem. The C50 sedan features a 2.0-litre engine paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, producing either 150 hp or 200 hp in a front-wheel-drive configuration.

Equipment includes LED headlights, dual-zone climate control, a 12-speaker sound system, and a suite of ADAS features such as adaptive cruise control and autonomous braking.

The K50 crossover, the company’s flagship, is also powered by a 2.0-litre engine but uses an eight-speed automatic. This produces 238 hp delivered through an all-wheel-drive system, with additional features including adaptive suspension.

Production is set for the former Volkswagen Group plant in Nizhny Novgorod ahead of a slated debut for both models this coming summer. The facility previously handled Skoda and Volkswagen models for the Russian market but has now been repurposed to assemble the new Volga line-up.

No pricing information was revealed for the Volga C50 and K50. It remains to be seen if these models will follow their predecessors by being priced for the masses, especially given the inclusion of modern amenities that the original cars lacked. However, with the C50 being positioned as a business-class sedan, the “affordable” legacy of the nameplate may be a thing of the past.
