Mercedes-Benz has confirmed it is working on a new G-Class Cabriolet, marking the return of the open-top icon more than a decade after it was discontinued in 2014. This project was first teased in September 2025, when the automaker hinted at a new “special edition” open-top variant of the G-Class, similar in exclusivity to the Mercedes-Maybach G 650 Landaulet, which was limited to just 99 units worldwide.
Details remain scarce, but Mercedes-Benz has confirmed that the new G-Class Cabriolet has already commenced its testing programme in Austria. Following this initial phase, the open-top SUV is set to head north to Sweden, where it will be subjected to a rigorous winter testing regime in extreme sub-zero conditions.
The carmaker also provided three photographs of the G-Class Cabriolet. Although heavily camouflaged, the images reveal, clear as day, the unique soft-top arrangement at the rear of the G-Class Cabriolet. If you happen to see one on the road somewhere on the planet, it is part of the company’s testing regime, where it sends prototypes for on-road trials throughout the world.
Powertrain details remain scarce, and it remains to be seen what will power the upcoming Mercedes-Benz G-Class Cabriolet. However, considering its status as a “special edition” model, it should feature the 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8 producing 585 hp and 850 Nm of torque from the Mercedes-AMG G63.
