KL-Karak expressway upgrade works in Q2 2025 – road widening, emergency bays and more

AFA PRIME Berhad (formerly ANIH Berhad), the concessionaire for the KL-Karak Expressway (KLK) and East Coast Expressway 1 (LPT1), has announced that several upgrades will take place on the KLK are scheduled to commence in Q2 2025.

These KLK widening works will span from KM19.2 to KM64.5, between the Gombak Toll Plaza and the Bentong Toll Plaza, and are expected to take 48 months to complete. Preparatory works, including slope trimming, drainage upgrades, flood mitigation, and retaining wall construction, are already underway.

The KLK expansion will involve the addition of one lane in each direction and the widening of road shoulders from the current 2.5 metres to 3 metres on both sides, following guidelines set by the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM).

The expansion will also include the construction of eight new emergency bays. These bays will allow vehicles experiencing breakdowns to be cleared from active lanes quickly, minimising disruption to traffic flow.

Recognising the Genting Sempah tunnel as a high-traffic area, construction works in this zone will be limited to non-peak hours. Additionally, night visibility will be improved with floodlights, and existing lighting will be repositioned for optimal effectiveness upon completion.

Alongside the expansion works on KLK, AFA PRIME Berhad has started flood mitigation works along LPT1 to improve climate resilience and ensure uninterrupted highway operations during periods of extreme weather.

These flood mitigation works on LPT1 include comprehensive risk assessments, drainage upgrades, and infrastructure enhancements to reduce the risk of flash flooding along the route.

To manage traffic during this period, AFA PRIME Berhad has appointed Edgenta PROPEL Berhad as its traffic management partner. This will involve the company deploying safety assets such as Digital Variable Message Systems (VMS) to display traffic alerts and emergency notices, reinforced by regular updates on AFA PRIME Berhad’s social media pages.
