XPeng and Volkswagen to build more and share fast-charging stations in China

XPeng and Volkswagen have expanded their partnership to build more electric vehicle (EV) super fast-charging stations in China.

In 2023, Volkswagen acquired a 4.99% stake in the Chinese automaker for $700 million. This expansion aims to make ownership of EV vehicles accessible to the Chinese market.

Following that, the Chinese and German automakers have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to open both companies’ liquid-cooled, fast-charging networks to each other’s customers. This includes more than 20,000 charging stations across 420 cities in China.

The new partnership also means both companies will co-brand super-fast charging stations. This will help to accelerate China’s charging network expansion.

Volkswagen has also developed a new architecture for intelligent and electric cars with XPeng to provide more affordable EVs in the Chinese market.

In February 2024, Volkswagen entered an agreement with XPeng to jointly develop two ‘smart’ electric cars under the Volkswagen name. According to the agreement, both companies are set to debut the cars in 2026.
