This Land Rover Defender-inspired SUV has 3 names, and it’s launched in Indonesia as the Chery J6

What do you mean “three names”? This rugged, fully electric SUV, launched in Indonesia as the Chery J6 just in time for Christmas, has also been seen as the Jaecoo J6 in Malaysia and the iCar 03 in China. Indonesian buyers can snag this SUV form IDR 489 million (approx. RM139k).

The most likely reason for the J6’s branding as a Chery in Indonesia is that Jaecoo hasn’t been established there, and iCar remains exclusive to China. So, for now, it’s simply the Chery J6 in Indonesia. Remember the Omoda C9 by Jaecoo here in Malaysia?

In Indonesia, the Chery J6 is offered in four variants: J6 RWD, J6 IWD, J6 RWD Phantom Edition, and J6 IWD Phantom Edition.

Heavily inspired by the Land Rover Defender, the J6 is undeniably stylish. Its boxy, rugged, and futuristic exterior features a unique front end with sleek headlights and small vertical elements.

Inside, the Indonesia spec J6 boasts a 15.6-inch infotainment display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a panoramic sunroof, and leather upholstery.

The RWD variant is powered by a rear-mounted electric motor producing 184 hp and 220 Nm. This allows it to go from 0-100 km/h in 10.5 seconds. It offers a claimed range of 426 km from its 65.69 kWh battery pack, although Chery hasn’t specified the testing standard used.

For the AWD variant, it gets a more potent dual-motor setup, generating 279 hp and 385 Nm. This translates to a quicker 0-100 km/h time of 6.5 seconds. Despite being equipped with a larger 69.77 kWh battery pack, the AWD variant has a slightly lower range of 418 km.

Chery hasn’t revealed detailed charging specifications, but claims the J6’s battery supports ultra-fast charging, taking only 30 minutes to charge from 30% to 80%.

The J6 was previewed in Malaysia as the Jaecoo J6 during this year’s Malaysia Auto Show, so its official launch might not be far behind. Perhaps sometime in 2025?
