BMW Group Malaysia has achieved a significant milestone in its electrification journey: as of Q3 2024, one in five new cars sold by the company is an electric vehicle (EV).
Revealed during a business update roundtable, the company has now sold 8,600 BMW and MINI cars in Malaysia thus far. Of those, 1,600 are EVs, accounting for 19% of total deliveries. This figure demonstrates the growing popularity of EVs in the country and signifies BMW’s strong position in the premium EV segment.

This success aligns with the growth experienced by the BMW Group globally in the electric vehicle segment. Between January and September 2024, the conglomerate saw a 19.1% increase in sales of fully-electric vehicles (BEVs), delivering over 300,000 units worldwide despite a challenging market environment.
A key factor in this achievement is the company’s commitment to “Technology Openness,” BMW Group Malaysia says. This approach prioritises offering a diverse range of drivetrain options, including internal combustion engines, plug-in hybrids, and electric vehicles, giving customers the freedom to choose the technology that best suits their lifestyle and needs.
The German carmaker offers a diverse line-up of EVs across its two brands in Malaysia. These include BMW’s i5, i4, i7, iX2, iX, and all-electric versions of the MINI Cooper, Countryman, and Aceman.
To further facilitate EV adoption in Malaysia, BMW Group has made over 2,020 charging facilities available in its network. These charging points are operated by BMW’s strategic partners and are accessible to BMW and MINI EV owners through various charging platforms.
Over 100 BMW i and MINI charging facilities are also available at its authorised dealerships and partner venues across the country, with more to come as part of the strategic infrastructure expansion plan.

This initiative will contribute to the Ministry of International Trade and Industry’s (MITI) goal of having 10,000 EV chargers by the end of 2025.
According to the government’s public portal for EV charger availability, PLAN Malaysia’s MEVNet dashboard, there are currently 3,354 public charging bays (from 1,113 locations) in operation in Malaysia as of today. Among those, 2,398 are AC chargers, with the other 956 being DC fast chargers.
