Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius takes the wheel of the next-gen CLA, sharing key details

With the next-generation Mercedes-Benz CLA slated for a 2025 launch, the three-star brand recently offered a closer look at its upcoming compact sedan, with Mercedes-Benz CEO, Ola Källenius taking the wheel of a camouflaged prototype for a spin around the brand’s test facility at Immendingen, Germany.

The all-new CLA will incorporate design elements from the Concept CLA Class. While the camouflage hides most of the details, the new headlights were revealed, featuring a three-star motif inspired by the Mercedes-Benz logo.

The next-generation Mercedes-Benz CLA will be offered in both fully electric and hybrid powertrain options. While no details have been shared, the company says that it’ll leverage technology from the Vision EQXX concept, which means the EV variant could potentially include its innovative thermal management system which uses a multi-source heat pump to effectively and efficiently keep both the powertrain and cabin cool.

A new next-generation EV drivetrain unit is also a key feature of the electric CLA. With its two-speed transmission, Mercedes-Benz claims this unit provides a perfect balance of sporty performance and efficiency.

Newly developed hybrid powertrains will also be available for the new CLA. Based on Mercedes Modular Architecture (MMA), these powertrains utilise 48-volt technology combined with an electrified transmission.

The hybrid powertrains will likely be sourced from Horse Powertrain, the GeelyRenault powertrain joint venture. Rumours suggest a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-four engine, with an output of around 250 hp and 360 Nm. This engine features mild hybrid technology, utilising a gearbox-mounted integrated starter generator (ISG) motor.

The next generation Mercedes-Benz CLA will also debut the Mercedes‑Benz Operating System (MB.OS), the brand’s latest infotainment system featuring an AI-powered MBUX virtual assistant.
