Land of Smiles gets its first electric pickup truck with the launch of the Riddara RD6 in Thailand

Riddara, Geely’s new international pickup truck brand owned by the Radar Auto subsidiary, has launched the Riddara RD6 fully electric pickup truck in Thailand following its first official teaser earlier this year.

Available in 2WD and 4WD variants, prices for the Riddara RD6 in Thailand range from THB899k (approx. RM117k) to THB1.299 million (approx. RM169k). Pickup trucks are incredibly popular in Thailand, and the Riddara RD6 marks the first electric option available in the kingdom.

Unlike traditional ladder-frame pickups like the Toyota Hilux, Mitsubishi Triton, and Isuzu D-Max, the RD6 features a monocoque chassis. This distinctive design sets it apart from most pickups on the market and hints at a more car-like driving experience.

The Riddara RD6, built on Geely’s Multiplex Attached Platform (MAP), might stir a sense of familiarity with its front-end design. That’s because it shares its appearance with the Geely Haoyue, a model we know as the Proton X90 here in Malaysia.

Standard equipment on the Riddara RD6 in Thailand includes LED headlights and taillights, 17-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, a push-start button, a six-way electronically adjustable driver’s seat, faux leather upholstery, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and CarbitLink smartphone connectivity (Android Auto is not available). A four-speaker sound system and a reverse camera are also included.

The 2WD Riddara RD6 is powered by a rear-mounted electric motor that produces 272 hp and 385 Nm of torque, allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.3 seconds. AWD variants meanwhile feature two electric motors, one on each axle, generating a combined output of 428 hp and 595 Nm for a 0-100 km/h sprint in just 4.5 seconds.

The RD6 boasts a water-wading depth of 500 mm for the 2WD variants, which increases to 815 mm for the AWD variants.

Three battery pack options are available for the Riddara RD6 in Thailand, these include a 63 kWh and 73 kWh with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry, and an 86 kWh ternary lithium-ion pack. These provide a range of 373 km to 461 km based on the NEDC test cycle.

Safety-wise, the base Riddara RD6 gets four airbags, whereas the rest of the range gets six airbags. All except the base variant get advanced driving assistant system (ADAS), which include:

  • Adaptive cruise control (ACC)
  • Lane centring assist (LCA)
  • Front departure alert
  • Blind spot monitoring (BSM)
  • Rear cross traffic alert (RCTA)

There’s currently no news about the Riddara RD6 launching in Malaysia. However, if it were to be introduced here, it could potentially enter the market as a Proton, serving as a spiritual successor to the Proton Arena.
