This special edition Ferrari Roma Spider proves that wood trims need to make a comeback

What was once a scarce and expensive material, carbon fibre – which undoubtedly is still expensive – has now taken over almost every facet of sports car styling. It’s plastered on quite literally everything, from small trims littered across the car, to even in extreme cases, replacing entire body panels with it.

We can respect the metallic weave’s functional properties, especially on the performance-focused models, owing to the material’s lightweight properties. But for styling purposes, especially when carmakers are now using fake plastic pieces to mimic the carbon fibre look? Yeah, that’s when it’s just a little too much for us. That’s why when Ferrari unveiled this special one-of-a-kind Roma Spider, we had to take a second glance.

One-off Ferraris are not anything new, and neither is this. As always, this is also the creation of the Ferrari Tailor Made customisation programme, inspired by the Montblanc Meisterstück pen. Okay, a little bit of an odd starting point, but we’ve seen weirder things. What truly made us do a double take, though, is the wood… so much wood.

The wood trims have replaced most of the carbon fibre bits inside. There’s wood on the tonneau cover behind the “+2” rear seats, wood on the door sills, and wood on the rear floor – even the floor mats get matching wood texture too. You might think that having that much wood might make it look a little too tacky, but it really works wonders here, especially when paired to the “chrome-free Nappa leather” upholstery in Rosso Bologna.

Aside from the wood, the special one-off model also gets a laser-etched compass rose design on the bonnet complete with the geographical coordinates of Maranello, a special etched Scuderia shield on the front fenders, and a lovely Oro Mida paint job paired to a colour-matched Montblanc Meisterstück pen.

Aside from looking good, the one-off Ferrari Roma Spider Tailor Made was also designed to be sustainable, using recycled tyre threads for the interior stitching, recycled sand from the casts in the Maranello foundry for some of the centre console components, and even the aluminium shavings recycled from the laser-etching process was recycled to make some components of its twin-turbo V8 engine.

Ferrari isn’t saying how much the special Tailor Made model costs to make, but seeing that you’ll be getting a one-of-a-kind pen with hand-worked AU750 solid gold and platinum-coated accents, alongside a leather-wrapped notebook, and not to mention the extensive work that has gone into the car itself… we can’t imagine it’d be cheap, even in terms of Ferrari standards.

The supercar maker says that since the special one-off Roma Spider model helped its Tailor Made department develop new personalisation techniques, it won’t be selling the car to customers just yet. Instead, it’ll be displayed at the special ‘One of a Kind’ exhibition in the Enzo Ferrari Musuem in Italy until February 2025. Though of course, if you have enough money, you can ask Ferrari to make you just about anything…
