Special ‘EV’ number plate series now open for bidding on JPJeBid – limited to electric vehicles only

In conjunction with the launch of the JPJ ePlate standardised number plate design, the Road Transport Department (JPJ) today also opened bidding for a special ‘EV’ number plate series (‘EV 1’ – ‘EV 9999’). As usual, the bidding will be done on the JPJeBid website, and will run for five days from now until 10pm, September 13.

All numbers in the series are open for booking, with the sole exception of ‘EV 1’, which, according to Transport Minister Anthony Loke, is already owned by a “special individual” – no prizes for guessing correctly. And while everyone can bid on the numbers, the ‘EV’ series can only be registered on fully electric vehicles (EVs) only.

The new series will also kick-start a line of EV-specific licence plates, with ‘EVA’, ‘EVB’, ‘EVC’, and so forth to follow after each series is fully utilised. Loke said in his speech earlier today that the ‘EV’ series of number plates will also be a rough barometer of how well EVs are being sold here in Malaysia.

Just to be clear, the new ‘EV’ special number plate series is not directly related to the new standardised number plate design, dubbed JPJ ePlate, that was unveiled earlier today – even though both are reserved for EVs only. The latter is the physical number plate itself, with a new black-on-white design and other modern features to prevent fraud and forgery.

That said, all ‘EV’ number plates will indeed be using the new JPJ ePlate system, as the latter is now mandatory for all new EV registrations.
