The Malaysian Ministry of Transport (MoT) has announced the new EV Road tax calculation that will be effective starting January 2026. It will still be based on the power output of the electric vehicle (EV) in “kW”, but will cost on average 70% cheaper than the outgoing calculation method (which some may not realise is in effect, since there is a waiver until the end of 2025).
As to why the 2026 EV Road Tax is still calculated based on the EV’s power output, the ministry said that this was the most feasible calculation method, taking into effect the current governance surrounding the automotive industry. Although vehicle weight and emissions have been taken into consideration, power output was still deemed the most feasible. This will be in effect for at least 5 years before it could possibly be revamped.
Now let’s get straight to the 2026 EV Road Tax calculation method. It is based on your EV’s power output in kW and the price blocks are as such:
Min. Power Output (W) | Max. Power Output (W) | Min. Road Tax (RM) | Max. Road Tax (RM) | Block increment per 9,999 W (RM) |
1 | 100,000 | 20 | 70 | 10 |
100,001 | 210,000 | 80 | 280 | 20 |
210,001 | 310,000 | 305 | 575 | 30 |
310,001 | 410,000 | 615 | 1,065 | 50 |
410,001 | 510,000 | 1,140 | 2,040 | 100 |
510,001 | 610,000 | 2,165 | 3,515 | 150 |
610,001 | 710,000 | 3,690 | 5,490 | 200 |
710,001 | 810,000 | 5,715 | 7,965 | 250 |
810,001 | 910,000 | 8,240 | 10,940 | 300 |
910,001 | 1,010,000 | 11,265 | 14,415 | 350 |
≥1,010,001 | unlimited | 20,000 | 20,000 | flat rate |
Just to make it easier on the eyes for you, here’s that same table but with kW as the unit of power to simplify things:
Min. Power Output (kW) | Max. Power Output (kW) | Min. Road Tax (RM) | Max. Road Tax (RM) | Block increment per 10kW (RM) |
>0 | 100 | 20 | 70 | 10 |
>100 | 210 | 80 | 280 | 20 |
>210 | 310 | 305 | 575 | 30 |
>310 | 410 | 615 | 1,065 | 50 |
>410 | 510 | 1,140 | 2,040 | 100 |
>510 | 610 | 2,165 | 3,515 | 150 |
>610 | 710 | 3,690 | 5,490 | 200 |
>710 | 810 | 5,715 | 7,965 | 250 |
>810 | 910 | 8,240 | 10,940 | 300 |
>910 | 1,010 | 11,265 | 14,415 | 350 |
>1,010 | unlimited | 20,000 | 20,000 | flat rate |
The question is, how do we use this table? So let’s take a few examples.
![](https://assets.autobuzz.my/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/04164005/BYD-Dolphin-Standard-Range-768x432.jpg)
BYD Dolphin Standard Range EV Road Tax: RM40
Let’s take the BYD Dolphin Standard Range which has a 70 kW maximum power output. It will fall into the first bracket which ranges from 1 W to 100,000 W. It will have a base RM20 road tax with an increment of RM10 per every 9,999 W. So that’s 2 block increments (RM20) for the Standard Range Dolphin since the first block ranges up to 50 kW. The EV Road tax calculation should look something like this, resulting in a RM40 road tax.
RM20 + (RM10 x 2) = RM40
Here’s a “zoomed-in” table to show how that calculation works.
Power Range (kW) | EV Road Tax (RM) |
1 – 50 | 20 |
51 – 60 | 30 |
61 – 70 | 40 |
71 – 80 | 50 |
81 – 90 | 60 |
91 – 100 | 70 |

BYD Atto 3 EV Road Tax: RM160
Now let’s take another BYD – the Atto 3 which has a power output of 150 kW. It falls into the 2nd bracket that ranges from 100,001 W to 210,000 W. So the bracket has a base price of RM80 and a block increment of RM20 per 9,999W. So that’s 4 increments (RM80). The first block in this bracket is 100-110kW thus it only results in 4 block increments for the Atto 3.
RM80 + (RM20 x 4) = RM160
This means that even the BYD Dolphin Extended Range with a 150-kW maximum power output will also have and EV Road Tax of RM160. The same applies to the Chery Omoda E5.
And if you’re confused as to why the Atto 3’s road tax is RM160 and RM180 due to only having 4 block increments, that’s because the blocks work like this (focusing on the 2nd bracket):
Power Range (kW) | EV Road Tax (RM) |
101 – 110 | 80 |
111 – 120 | 100 |
121 – 130 | 120 |
131 – 140 | 140 |

171 – 180 | 220 |
181 – 190 | 240 |
191 – 200 | 260 |
201 – 210 | 280 |

Tesla Model 3 RWD EV Road Tax: RM280
Now let’s move on to something that is the talk of the town – the Tesla Model 3. Specifically the Tesla Model 3 RWD. Although its power output isn’t officially listed on its website (which we will never understand why) the Ministry of Transport has gathered that it makes 208 kW, thus positioning it in the same bracket as the BYD Atto 3 above.
If you’ve got the hang of how the new 2026 EV Road Tax is calculated, this should be an easy one for you. So that’s an RM80 starting price with 10 increments of RM20 (RM200). So it all adds up to RM280.
RM80 + (RM20 x 10) = RM280
Power Range (kW) | EV Road Tax (RM) |
101 – 110 | 80 |
111 – 120 | 100 |
121 – 130 | 120 |

BMW iX xDrive50: RM965
What about the most popular luxury EV in Malaysia? With the iX xDrive40 dropped from the menu, the “entry-level” BMW iX in Malaysia is the BMW iX xDrive50. It has a total power output of 385 kW, putting it in the 4th bracket. So that’s a base price of RM615 with 7 block increments of RM50.
RM615 + (RM50 x 7) = RM965
Power Range (kW) | EV Road Tax (RM) |
311 – 320 | 615 |
321 – 330 | 665 |

Porsche Taycan Turbo GT: RM6,715
And just for the sake of it, let’s go to one extreme end of EVs and that is performance EVs. Here we have the new Porche Taycan Turbo GT which is able to put out 760 kW with launch control and overboost. That puts it in the 8th bracket with a starting price of RM5,715 and 4 block increments of RM250 for every 10 kW up.
RM5,715 + (RM250 x 4) = RM6,715
Sounds a lot. That’s actually quite reasonable considering that a W204 C63 would have a road tax that costs RM16,566. Oh, and this new EV Road Tax calculation is much cheaper than the initial one that is in effect right now (albeit with a waiver). With the “old” calculation method (which we will address at the end), the Taycan Turbo GT’s road tax would amount to RM17,494.

*The Ministry of Transport officially lists the Tesla Model 3 Long Range AWD with a 366 kW output. The Model 3 Highland Performance isn’t officially listed in the document shared by the MoT, but a look at Tesla Malaysia’s website lists a peak power of 460 hp (338 kW), which is curiously lower than the Long Range AWD. The Model 3 Performance’s total power from its motors is rated at 461 kW (>600 hp) although the actual output is limited by the battery (hence 460 hp).
*Dear Tesla, just list your official power outputs for the public to see. And when you do so, please do it in kW (an SI unit) like everybody else.
As for the old calculation method, the Ministry of Transport has also been kind enough to share the “price drop” of EV road tax across (almost) all makes and models:
