Volkswagen to launch a new SUV in Malaysia soon – slotted in between Tiguan Allspace & Touareg, CKD

Could it be the Tayron?

At the media drive event of the 2024 Volkswagen Touareg R-Line, Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) has just confirmed that it will be introducing a new SUV that will sit in between the Tiguan Allspace and Touareg. However, the carmaker isn’t revealing what the specific model is just yet but mentioned that the SUV will be making its launch in Malaysia soon, with no launch date in sight. The said SUV will be locally assembled at its plant in Pekan, to keep its price competitive.

The upcoming SUV, although not specified, won’t be limited to a model from Volkswagen’s global lineup, but could be from the brand’s Indian or Chinese model library as well. This is according to Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia Brand Manager, Charles Lim.

Volkswagen Touareg R-Line

Currently, Volkswagen’s lineup in Malaysia consists of two SUV models, including the Tiguan Allspace and the Touareg. For context, the top-of-the-line Tiguan Allspace R-Line costs RM258,990, while the Touareg R-Line will cost you RM469,990. That represents a price difference of RM211,000 between the brand’s two SUVs.

Technically speaking, there is also the Volkswagen Arteon R-Line 4MOTION sedan, whose price is precisely between the Tiguan Allspace and the Touareg. However, when it comes to SUVs, Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia does not have an SUV in the RM300,000 price range.

Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace R-Line

The Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace is a C-segment SUV. Its rivals in Malaysia consist of models such as the Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5, and Peugeot 3008. But unlike most of its rivals, the Tiguan Allspace comes with seven seats. Offered in three variants, prices for the Tiguan Allspace in Malaysia start at RM176,990.

The Volkswagen Touareg R-Line on the other hand is available in a sole variant only in Malaysia and is priced at RM469,990. This luxury SUV’s competition in Malaysia includes cars like the BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE, and Lexus RX.

With the upcoming Volkswagen SUV to be locally assembled (CKD) in Malaysia, Volkswagen is committed to making Malaysia its regional production hub. Volkswagen models assembled in Malaysia will not only consist of regular engine-powered vehicles but also electric vehicles (EV). What model do you think the SUV in question will be?
