Malaysia to get limited edition Volkswagen Golf GTI – 50 units only, to celebrate 50 years of the Golf

Volkswagen Passenger Car Malaysia (VPCM) will be launching a limited edition Volkswagen Golf GTI exclusively made for the Malaysian market. Announced during the Volkswagen Touareg media drive event, the special edition hot hatch is said to be making its launch “very soon”, although no specific launch date has been revealed. Only 50 units of the limited edition Golf GTI will be made to celebrate 50 years since the birth of the Volkswagen Golf.

Aside from the above info, VPCM did not reveal other details about the car. However, we can expect the limited edition model to be made based on the Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk8 sold here in Malaysia.

In Malaysia, the Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk8 received an update in January this year and is priced at RM252,990, making it RM6,000 costlier than the 2023 model. This update brought two new features to the hot hatch, including the new 10-speaker Harman Kardon sound system and a new head-up display (HUD). Aside from the two new equipment, the Golf GTI in Malaysia remains pretty much the same as before.

Powering the Volkswagen Golf GTI is still the same 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, making 245 hp (metric) and 370 Nm. Paired with a 7-speed DSG (wet) dual-clutch transmission, power is sent to the front wheels only.

Added to the Golf GTI back in 2023 is the brand’s IQ. Drive advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) suite. This includes features such as Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Prevention with Adaptive Lane Guidance, and Autonomous Emergency Braking with pedestrian and cyclist support.

Globally, the Volkswagen Golf Mk8.5 made its debut earlier in January this year. It gets new bumpers, headlights, wheels, and now sports an illuminated “VW” emblem up front as well.

The Volkswagen Golf Mk8.5 is available with a total of 9 powertrain options. This includes mild hybrid (eTSI), plug-in hybrid (eHybrid and GTE), turbocharged petrol (TSI), and turbocharged diesel (TDI).

As for the sportier Golf GTI, it now makes slightly more power at 265 hp (metric), which is 20 hp (metric) more than the Golf GTI Mk8 makes. Anyways, are you excited about the upcoming limited edition Golf GTI? Do share your thoughts with us!
