Leaked: BYD Seal X hatchback – EV sedan gets sporty sibling

Images of what looks to be the hatchback version of the BYD Seal have just surfaced online. According to filings from the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), the all-electric hatchback is referred to as the BYD Seal X, and is most likely the production version of the brand’s Ocean-M Concept hot hatch revealed at the Beijing Auto Show held last month.

Looking at the BYD Seal X’s dimensions, it measures 4,630 mm long, 1,880 mm wide, and 1,490 mm tall, and is underpinned by a 2,820 mm long wheelbase. This makes it almost slightly longer than the Honda Civic Hatchback which measures 4,550 mm long.

The MIIT filing also revealed a number of nameplates, including the Seal 06GT, Seal Mini, and Seal 05EV. With that, the Seal X nameplate is most likely just a placeholder name for the hatchback.

On the outside, the BYD Seal X has kept many of the Ocean-M Concept’s design elements, and is reminiscent of the Seal family’s design language. Up front, the Seal X is fitted with eyebrow-like headlights and a mesh-pin lower intake flanked by boomerang-shaped faux side inlets. Round the back, the connected wavy-shaped taillight design from the Ocean-M Concept has also been brought over to the Seal X.

However, you might notice that the BYD Seal X looks pretty tame as compared to the Ocean-M Concept. Could this mean BYD will be coming out with a more aggressive version of this model?

On the performance side of things, the MIIT filings show two powertrain options for the BYD Seal X, with one being a single-motor rear-wheel drive setup that puts out 160 kW (218 metric hp). There is also a more powerful dual-motor all-wheel drive version that features a 110 kW (150 metric hp) and a 200 kW (272 metric hp) motor. The MIIT did not publish a combined output figure for this variant. However, according to Car News China, the dual-motor setup could provide a combined output of 310 kW (421 metric hp).

The BYD Seal X will be joining the brand’s Seal family as it makes its debut later this year. The Seal family currently consists of the regular Seal sedan, the Seal 06, the Seal DM-i, and the Seal U.

In Malaysia, only the BYD Seal sedan is sold here. Two variants are offered, namely the Premium and the Performance, with a starting price of RM179,800. The former is powered by a single-motor rear-wheel drive setup that produces 313 hp and 360 Nm, while the latter puts out 530 hp and 670 Nm thanks to a dual-motor all-wheel drive setup.
