Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV joins Merdeka Parade ahead of Malaysia launch – AMG Line, rear axle steering

Soon to launch in Malaysia, the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV made its first public appearance in Malaysia at this year’s Merdeka Parade. Entirely covered in a Merdeka-themed wrap, what we can see on this unit is the fact that it sports AMG Line wheels and AMG line grille.

With the EQS SUV soon to launch in Malaysia, the EG electric series in Malaysia will be closer to completion as the only ‘missing’ models so far are the EQS SUV and the smaller EQE SUV. Already officially available in Malaysia are the EQA, EQB, EQC, EQE, and even the locally assembled EQS. Even Mercedes-AMG EQ models are already in Malaysia, namely the EQE 53 and EQS 53.

Essentially an SUV version of the Mercedes-Benz EQS, the EQS SUV made its global debut back in April 2022 and was listed with three variants – the 450+, 450 4MATIC, and 580 4MATIC. There is even the Mercedes-Maybach EQS 680 SUV which is apparently listed on Mercedes-Benz Malaysia’s website although the registration of interest isn’t actually applicable.

Size-wise, the EQS SUV measures 5,125 mm long, 1,959 mm wide, and 1,718 mm tall. Its wheelbase measures 3,210 mm long. It is only slightly smaller than the Mercedes-Benz GLS. Dimension-wise, the closest electric vehicle (EV) available in Malaysia that we could compare the EQS SUV would be the Lotus Eletre (although the Eletre doesn’t get three seat rows). The BMW iX and Audi Q8 e-tron are closer in size to the EQE SUV (which is now open for ROI in Malaysia).

Notice the awkward angle of the rear wheels due to the rear axle steering

The specifications of the three variants of the EQS SUV are as such:

Max. Torque (Nm)568800858

As for now, what we can say by looking at the EQS SUV is that it is equipped with the AMG Line trim as evidently seen by the front grille design and the AMG line wheels. Even the bumper designs hint at the AMG Line trim. If the unit used for the Merdeka Parade is anything to go by, the soon-to-launch Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV will also be equipped with a panoramic glass roof and rear axle steering, just like the saloon EQS.

If the Malaysian debut of the EQS saloon can be of any reference, it was first launched in Malaysia in the 450+ variant with an AMG Line trim (fully imported from Germany) but was later succeeded by the EQS 500 4MATIC with an Electric Art exterior (locally assembled in Pekan). Will the EQS SUV follow in the footsteps of the saloon EQS? Judging by the wrap bulge on the right side of the tailgate, it is highly likely that it is a 4MATIC variant of the EQS SUV.
