There’s a new electric car that has surfaced in Malaysia, and it is the BYD Dolphin. Launched in two variants, prices start at RM100,530 for the Dynamic Standard Range variant and top off at RM125,530 for the Premium Extended Range variant. The BYD Dolphin is the brand’s second car to be launched in the Malaysian market.

Size-wise, the BYD Dolphin is slightly larger than your average B-segment hatchback, measuring 4,290 mm long, 1,770 mm wide, and 1,570 mm tall. Its wheelbase measures 2,700 mm long. Exterior highlights of the BYD Dolphin include its unique dual-tone colour scheme, flush door handles, and interesting side profile surfaces.

Powering the BYD Dolphin is a single front-mounted electric motor, but the performance differs with respect to the variant. The standard range outputs 94 hp and 180 Nm. The 0-100 km/h sprint is done in 12.3 seconds. As for the Extended Range, it outputs 201 hp and 310 Nm and the car does the century sprint in 7.0 seconds.

As for battery and range, the Standard Range houses a 44.9-kWh battery pack that provides 340 km of range (WLTP), while the Extended Range packs a 60.48-kWh battery pack that provides 427 km of range (WLTP). Both variants can only handle single-phase 7-kW AC charging. DC charging can be done at a maximum rate of 60 kW for the Standard Range and 80 kW for the Extended Range.

Inside, the Dolphin shows its relation to the BYD Atto 3. While it may be not as adventurous as the Atto 3, the flowing lines set its cabin apart from the usual B-segment hatchback. The interior gets a dual-tone treatment and the colour corresponds to the exterior colour. Interior highlights include a 12.8-inch rotating infotainment display with Apple CarPlay support, a t5-inch digital instrument cluster, Voice Assistant, and leatherette upholstery. Exclusive to the Extended Range are features like powered front seats and a panoramic glass roof.

Standard safety features include Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), Intelligent power brake system, Predictive Collision Warning (PCW), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), Rear Cross Traffic Brake, Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Lane Departure Prevention (LDP), Emergency Lane Keeping Assist (ELKA), Lane Keeping Support (LKS), Lane Change Collision Warning (LCW), 360-degree camera system, Blind Spot Detection (BSD), and Door opening warning (DOW).
