Race of in-car social media app: Audi’s 2024 models get built-in YouTube app

So, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class W214 first had TikTok built into its infotainment system, while the BMW 5 Series later gained a gaming system too. Guess what, Audi isn’t letting itself fall behind, and is now integrating YouTube into its selected models.

The YouTube integration is possible thanks to a new app store embedded into Audi’s infotainment system which allows customers to access popular third party apps via the vehicle’s Multimedia Interface (MMI). Besides YouTube, apps that are enabled in the app store include music, video, gaming, navigation, weather, news, and more.

With the YouTube app, owners can view live streams, watch videos on the video streaming platform to entertain themselves while charging their Audi vehicle or during driving breaks. However, for obvious safety reasons, occupants can only play videos when the vehicle is parked.

Using the YouTube app is pretty simple, as it works just like the same app on a smartphone. Users can simply install the app via the app store without needing to take a detour using a smartphone.

Once installed, the app will appear in Audi’s MMI, allowing users to launch it just by simply tapping the icon. YouTube Premium members will also be able to log in and watch ad-free content as usual.

How does the car access the internet to surf YouTube videos then, you may ask? A data link is established via an embedded SIM card that is permanently integrated in the car, which is then used to access third party apps such as YouTube.

The YouTube app will be available starting with selected models of Audi’s 2024 model year equipped with the latest third-generation modular infotainment system (MIB 3). Specifically, these include the Audi A4, A5, Q5, A6, A7, A8, Q8 e-tron, and the Audi e-tron GT Quattro.

The app store will be optionally available with these models starting from their respective launch dates in markets such as Europe, Canada, and the US. The system will also be rolled out to other regions and models of other Volkswagen Group brands on a later date.
