Volkswagen celebrates 25 years of Polo GTI with new “special edition” model

Think ‘hot hatch’, and you’ll think of the Golf GTI. But Volkswagen also has another (lesser celebrated) hot hatch called the Polo GTI, which is turning 25 this year. So to celebrate the anniversary, Volkswagen has unveiled the new limited-edition Polo GTI Edition 25, with only 2,500 units to ever be made.

As special as it may sound, though, the new special edition model is unfortunately all show without any additional ‘go’, as all you’re getting for the extra money are just some visual mods. These include the blacked out roof, wing mirrors, and 18-inch wheels, complemented by exclusive decals on the sides, red brake calipers, and chrome-plated tailpipes at the back.

These extra touches do work quite well on the Ascot Grey paintwork, but the colour is not exclusive to the limited-edition model either (though not available on the regular GTI). What you won’t be able to get on the regular Polo GTI, though, is the unique door sill plates that read ‘One of 2500’, denoting its limited-edition status.

Otherwise, the rest of the car is essentially identical to the regular Volkswagen Polo GTI. Underneath the bonnet is a turbocharged two-litre inline-four engine, making 207 hp and 320 Nm of torque. Drive is sent to the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission for a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 6.5 seconds.

As with the standard Polo GTI, the new Edition 25 variant here comes with the specially-tuned suspension that also lowers the car by 15 mm. A XDS electronic differential lock system – also standard on the standard GTI – helps improve traction out of corners.
