Chery sold 1,232,727 cars in 2022 – 37% from exports, China’s top exporter for 20 straight years

With 105,483 units sold in December, Chery has now delivered a record-breaking 1,232,727 units globally in 2022. The figure represents a 28.2% increase over the previous year, and it’s also breached the one-million-unit mark for the first time for Chery – which they’ve already achieved since October 2022.

The figure also includes 451,337 units (67.7% increase over 2021) of export sales, which accounted for 36.6% of the brand’s total deliveries last year. Not only is that a record-breaking annual figure for Chery, the performance also helped the marque remain at the top of Chinese passenger car exports for the 20th year in a row.

Chery’s exports achievements were mainly driven by the Tiggo 7 and Tiggo 8 series, which made their international debut in several countries last year. With monthly export figures exceeding the 50,000-units mark for four consecutive months last year, Chery’s cumulative export volume currently accounts for a fifth of the total export volume of Chinese automobiles.

Last year also saw a huge boom in the brand’s technological innovations, with the establishment of a new “technological innovation factory” driving the development of new technologies through new products for the brand. As of end-2022, Chery has applied for a total of 25,795 patents and was granted 17,177, of which 37% were for inventions, which the company say is amongst the top in the industry.

This was accelerated through its many open collaborations explored last year, forming alliances with many top names including Haier, Huawei, CATL, and Horizon Robotics to research in the fields of industrial internet, intelligent solutions, and traction battery systems.

Chery said it is striving to maintain growth in annual sales volume this year, and although it did not provide a target figure for 2023, we do know that its strategy includes an official launch in Malaysia.

The brand is set to establish a dealership network with over 30 outlets across the nation, with a “phase one” product launch plan that includes the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro and Omoda 5 SUVs, both of which already previewed here in Malaysia last year alongside the Tiggo 7 Pro and Tiggo 4 Pro.

A local assembly plant is also in the plans for Chery in Malaysia, as part of the company’s massive investment plan for the ASEAN region, which will see our nation become Chery’s base for the region.
