Hari Merdeka is just around the corner once again, and this year, a long school holiday follows right after the celebration of Malaysia’s 65th year of independence. In case you still don’t know how to spend your time on our National Day, Bosch has 5 suggestions for you.
1. Plan a freeing road trip
What better way to celebrate Merdeka than exploring our own country? Not only will you see the Jalur Gemilang proudly flying high all over the nation, you can also enjoy the rich experiences and local food that Malaysia has to offer.
This is also a perfect opportunity to reunite with family and friends. Before you head out, Bosch suggests you plan your route with adequate stops, stock up on water and snacks, and create a road trip playlist before hitting the road.

2. Visit the Tugu Negara and enjoy the fireworks lighting up the KL Skyline
Rekindle your pride as a Malaysian by taking a trip to our national monument and honour those who have braved the front lines to give us our independence. Near the Tugu Negara are also picture-worthy places such as the Perdana Botanical Garden, KL Bird Park, and the ASEAN Sculpture Garden.
Spend your time in KL during the countdown, and you can also enjoy the beautiful skyline as it lights up with fireworks. Good lookout points suggested by Bosch include Taman Titiwangsa, Changkat Semantan, and Bukit Permai. You could also drive up to Genting Highlands to get an even better (albeit smaller) view.
3. Watch the National Day Parade on 31st August at Dataran Merdeka
After a night of enjoying the fireworks, you could join the crowd at the Dataran Merdeka to witness the National Day Parade. Here, you can expect a host of activities lined up to inspire the patriotic spirit. While in KL, you’ll be just a stone’s throw away from fantastic food and spectacular sights, so take this time to explore the capital and soak up all it has to offer.

4. Merdeka yourself from hassle before you put the pedal to the metal
If you’re a bit of a grease monkey, you can use the holiday as an opportunity to Merdeka yourself from the usual car hassles. Failing to plan is planning to fail. Here’s what Bosch thinks you should check in your vehicle to ensure it runs perfectly:
- Steering – make sure the steering system is working smoothly
- Brakes – take note of any unusual sound when braking
- Fluid levels – brake fluid, engine oil, coolant fluid, and wiper fluid
- Tyres – check tread depth and tyre pressure
- Battery – check on the health of the battery and recharge if required
- Wipers –change if they are worn out
- Lights – visual check to make sure they are functional
- Car suspension – send for checks if you hear any unusual noise
- Seatbelts – check for any visual damage on the belt and buckle
- Baby car seat – make sure the car seat is properly installed and no visual damage or cracks on it
