Malaysia-bound Ora Good Cat launched in UK with funky new name

As in, literally. The unique-looking hatchback has just made its European debut in the United Kingdom, bearing a new name called Funky Cat. But aside from the name change, the car is essentially identical to the Good Cat (or Haomao in China), which is due to be introduced in Malaysia soon.

The Ora Funky Cat is offered exclusively in a First Edition guise at launch, powered by a front-mounted electric motor making 171 hp and 250 Nm of torque – a pretty significant jump over its Thai counterpart. Translating that into performance figures, the Funky Cat does the 0-100 km/h in 8.3 seconds, onward to a top speed of 159 km/h.

Electrons are supplied by a 48 kWh battery pack, which allows for an estimated range of 310 km based on the WLTP test cycle. Charging from 15-80% takes approximately three to four hours using a regular 11 kW AC charger, while an 80 kW DC charger shortens it to around 40 minutes.

The First Edition version of the Ora Funky Cat is quite generous in its equipment appointments, with standard items including the 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlamps, 360-degree surround-view monitor, dual-zone climate control, wireless phone charger, as well as powered front seats.

Instrumentation is made up of two 10.25-inch displays on the dashboard, with the infotainment system also supporting Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity.

As for safety equipment, the Funky Cat First Edition comes equipped with adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assist, lane keep assist with lane centring functionality, blind spot monitor, autonomous emergency braking, and rear cross traffic alert with emergency braking.

The Ora Funky Cat is backed by a five-year unlimited mileage vehicle warranty and an eight-year, 100,000 mile (160,934 km) battery warranty in the UK. Pricing wise, the funky hatchback comes in at GBP30,495 (approx. RM 168k), after reductions via the UK government’s Plug-In Car Grant.

Great Wall Motors say that there are already over 6,000 registrations of interest for the Funky Cat, which sounds pretty impressive for a new Chinese brand that is only just marking its entry in the country. And as a fun fact, the four exterior colour options (Nebula Green, Starry Black, Mars Red, and Aurora Green) were also selected based on a public poll!
