With BMW offering the world’s first factory-fitted wireless charging technology for electrified vehicles, Hyundai and Kia are in arms to top the idea with an additional Automated Valet Parking System (AVPS).
As with the wireless charging system, the car will first inform the driver when the battery charge is low. Through the smartphone, the driver can then command the car to head to the nearest wireless charging facility.
When the vehicle is fully charged, it will automatically relocate itself to another vacant parking space using the Automated Valet Parking System (AVPS), allowing other vehicles to charge at the spot.
When the driver calls for the vehicle, it will then autonomously return to the location of the driver. It’s a seamless process between the driver, electric vehicle, parking facility and charging system.
With overcrowded parking lots already becoming a problem of the present, this concept although still in the “hopes and dreams stage” offers the drivers the convenience of being dropped off at their destination as the car drives itself to an empty charging station and subsequently a parking space. Charging status can also be monitored in real-time.
Kia and Hyundai are looking to implement the technology upon the launch of a Level 4 autonomous vehicle around 2025. The Korean heavyweights also plan to commercialise autonomous vehicles in various smart cities from 2021, with a goal of launching fully autonomous vehicles by 2030.
