BMW X2 officially teased – the sportier X1 that millennials have been waiting for

The last time we’ve heard of the BMW’s latest addition to the SUV stable was during the 2016 Paris International Motor Show, dubbed the Concept X2. Recently, BMW, together with Highsnobiety has released the first official images of the BMW X2; the first model in BMW’s elaborate plan to regain its market leader position.

Although wrapped in bright orange cameo livery, we can still make out that the production model retains much of the concept’s athletic, coupe-like design. At the front, it appears that the flipped kidney grille made it to the final design, giving it a distinct yet familiar face.

The lower apron is of a more conventional horizontal slats design as opposed to the large scoops on the concept car. Although, if BMW were to spawn a X2 M or M-Sport variant, the concept’s sharp bumper would not be out of place.

At the rear, the tapering roofline and slim tail lamp design sets itself apart from the family-oriented X1. The dual exhaust outlet is also nicely integrated to the rear bumper on either end. On the heavily camouflaged display vehicle, we can tell that there is a circular outline right beside the Hofmeister kink, perhaps the designers really went with sticking a BMW badge like on the concept?

The new X2 will most likely ride on BMW’s UKL2 platform and be front-wheel driven like the X1. Expect a four-wheel drive option for certain variants as well. BMW is holding back on its powertrain options and launch date but promises that the X2 will be a “sporty vehicle with bold character”.
