Next generation Mazda BT-50 will be based on the Isuzu D-Max

As we know, Mazda’s pickup is represented by the BT-50, which shares the same underpinnings as the Ford Ranger. However, that will no longer be the case. Mazda has decided to move on by having Isuzu produce their next-generation Mazda BT-50.

The two Japanese companies have inked a deal that will facilitate just that, which means the BT-50 will be based on the next-generation D-Max model. This also allows Isuzu to increase its competitiveness by boosting economies of scale. At the same time, this allows Mazda to continue offering pickups, complementing their Skyactiv range of passenger cars and SUVs range.2016 Isuzu D-Max at Bangkok - AutoBuzz.my

Sharing platforms among manufacturers is fairly common, more so for pickups. Mercedes-Benz’s upcoming X-Class will be based on the Nissan Navara, and Nissan’s recent takeover of Mitsubishi might just mean that future Navara and Triton pickups will just be a pickup with different badges. In fact, this is not the first time Mazda and Isuzu collaborated as the latter entity used to produce pickups for Mazda for the Japanese domestic market.

What’s more interesting is the outcome of the future D-Max and BT-50 models, more so when the current D-Max pickup is based on a Chevrolet platform. Putting a SkyActiv Diesel powertrain in a future Mazda pickup will be an attractive proposition too, although Isuzu has their own fair share of efficient diesel powertrains at its disposal.

As for now, the BT-50 in its second-generation guise is now five years old and Mazda Malaysia is offering both the 2.2-litre and 3.2-litre turbodiesel variants with all-wheel drive. Prices begin from RM80K to RM112K.
