Video Review: Volkswagen Golf R Mk7, featuring Merc A45 AMG [+Video]

We were all really excited when the all-new Volkswagen Golf R was launched in Malaysia. The first encounter with it was in Sepang International Circuit when Volkswagen Group Malaysia organized the media track day event there. What, a machine.

Sits 60 horsepower above the already-wunderbar Golf GTI, its 2.0-liter engine generates 280 horsepower and 380 Nm of torque! 0 to 100, 5 seconds flat! The R department is really something, squeezing 140hp per liter out from the turbocharged 4-cylinder TSI engine.

But then, the other German automaker did a better job by producing 180hp per liter in “The Beast” – powered by the most powerful 2.0-liter engine in the world. That is why we brought it along, the 360hp Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG to the video review of the Golf R.

This time we invited a professional driver, Ivan Khong, who is Malaysia’s Gymkhana Champion, Intensive Driver Trainer for BMW, and he was also a rally and race driver. If you remember, he was the stunt driver in the “Men vs MINI” video that we produced last year.

In this review, we set up a test course which Ivan will show you why more power doesn’t always translate to usable speed especially around corners. [Spoiler Alert] Golf R’s XDS+ did the trick.

Before you start to complain comment, this video review is not a full-on comparison review between the Golf R Mk7 and the A45 AMG. We still believe in focusing on one car to give you a proper review with in-depth details. I hope you’ll like it. If you happen to not like it, please, just be nice.
