Mercedes-Benz S 65 AMG Coupé revealed, colossal torque from V12 biturbo

The range-topping S-Class Coupé has been revealed by Mercedes, continuing the legacy of V12 power on their flagship Coupé. Looks like there is still life in the monster engine, as proven by the latest iteration of the 5,980cc twin-turbo V12 in this S 65 AMG Coupé.

Producing 630hp at 4,800-5,400rpm and an insane-sounding 1000Nm of torque at 2,300-4,300rpm, the S65 AMG Coupé rockets from 0-100 km/h in 4.1 seconds. Although the top speed is still electronically-limited at 250 km/h. Amazingly the fuel consumption is rated at 11.9l/100km, not too shabby for a 6-litre V12 biturbo coupé!

Power is sent to the rear wheels via The AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC with three driving modes; Controlled Efficiency (C), Sport (S), and Manual (M) and to promote better fuel efficiency there’s ECO start/stop function. Buyers can opt for a ceramic high-performance composite brakes too if they find the “standard” brakes insufficient.

Being an AMG model, the S 65 AMG Coupé is equipped with the AMG sports suspension in the company of ROAD SURFACE SCAN and MAGIC BODY CONTROL. Both work together by scanning the road ahead using the stereo camera and prepares the suspension to suit the road surface. There’s also this interesting feature called the curve tilting function, which allows the S 65 AMG Coupé to lean into corners like a motorcyclist.

The exterior is quite restrained for a V12 beast, but you can easily identify the additional bling with the chrome elements on the front grille and lower intakes, on the side skirts, and even on the rear diffuser and the quad-tailpipes. Those 16-spokes 20-inch wheels are equally-blinged as well, measuring 8.5 x 20 at the front and 9.5 x 20 at the back. They are wrapped in 255/40 R 20 and 285/35 R 20 tyres respectively. Chromed “V12 BITURBO” lettering on the front wings will ensure people don’t mistake it as the “cheaper” S 63 AMG Coupé that only has a 5.5-litre V8 under the bonnet.

Inside, the seats are covered in designo AMG Exclusive nappa leather, with bespoke front sports seats that is said to “ensure optimal long-distance comfort” available in the Exclusive package. If that’s not enough, the dashboard, door panels, roof liner, and even the roof grab handles are covered in leather in the Exclusive package. Rest of the interior is lavishly-equipped including the three-spoke sports steering with shift paddles, huge high-resolution TFT display for the instrument panel, colour head-up display, touchpad controller integrated into the handrest, and a Burmester® high-end 3D surround sound system.
