BMW Group Malaysia unveiled the new BMW R nineT to commemorate BMW Motorrad’s 90th anniversary, a classic roadster created to represent the company’s 90 years of history. Launched at the same time is the new BMW S 1000 R, the naked version of the legendary BMW S 1000 RR.
BMW R nineT
The first BMW motorcycle was made in 1932, the BMW R 32. The heart of the R nineT is the same longitudinal twin-cylinder boxer engine from the R 32 ninety years ago. Now, the air or oil-cooled 1,170 cc boxer engine together with a six-speed gearbox in the new R nineT produces 110 horsepower and 119 Nm of torque.
Design and development of the commemorative model is based on “puristic simplicity” and “emotion”. With its classic and minimalist design, the R nineT is set to create an emotional bond between man and machine.
The BMW R nineT is available only in a classic black colour scheme; Black Strom Metallic with silver and metallic contrast. The R nineT is priced at RM 115,800 on the road, without insurance.
BMW S 1000 R
The legendary BMW S 1000 RR was introduced in year 2009, as the first purpose-built superbike with a powerful four-cylinder in-line engine. Now, the naked version of it has arrived, the new BMW S 1000 R sports roadster, with it’s distinct “tail up, nose down” stance.
Powered by the same 999 cc four-cylinder in-line engine as the RR, the S 1000 R produces 160 horsepower and 112 Nm of torque, 10 Nm more than the RR. It comes with two riding modes, “Rain” and “Road”. When the “Rain” mode is engaged, the ride will be soft and responsive to tackle wet conditions. “Road” mode provides optimal throttle response and controlability. Optional “Dynamic” and “Dynamic Pro” modes are available together with Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) for sporty performance on both road and track.
The new BMW S 1000 R is available in three different colours; non-metallic Racing Red, metallic Frozen Dark Blue, and the corporate design colours of BMW Motorrad, with non-metallic Light White paintwork. The S 1000 R is priced at RM 95,800 on the road, without insurance.
BMW Group Malaysia invited BMW Motorrad France stunt rider, Big Jim to the launch event, which was held at Sunway Pyramid Ice Skating. So naturally, Big Jim went ‘skating’ on the new BMW S 1000 R with snow tyres and did a few tricks.
