The Subaru WRX STI Type RA NBR Special is quicker than a Nissan GT-R Nismo!

Remember that souped-up Subaru that was supposed to conquer the Nurburgring? Well, it turns out the more hardcore Subaru WRX STI Type RA NBR Special did just that, making it the fastest four-door production sedan around the Green Hell.

It clocked a blistering laptime of 6 minutes 57.5 seconds, which means it’s faster than the Lamborghini Aventador LP750-4 Superveloce and Nissan GT-R Nismo (cilck here to see the top 100 lap times). To top it off, it’s just 0.5 seconds slower than the Porsche 918 Spyder!

The record breaking WRX STI isn’t the special edition variant that just went on sale in the US. Instead, it’s the same car that broke the track record at the Isle of Man last year. This time, professional tuners Prodrive tweaked the 2.0-litre turbocharged flat-four to produce over 600 hp at 8,500 rpm. Rally-spec sequential transmission is thrown in, with obscenely quick gearshifts (in the region of 20 to 25 milliseconds).

It also receives an improved aerodynamic kit that’s capable of generating about 300 kg of downforce. Also included is Drag Reduction System, similar to that on an F1 car. At the push of a button, the rear wing angle is changed, reducing drag at higher speeds. A set of 9-inch wide slick tyres provided the much-needed grip while attacking this 24.4 km track.
