Ferrari reinvents the icon with the all-new Ferrari 849 Testarossa

After a 29-year absence, an iconic name is back in the Maranello stable. Say hello to the all-new Ferrari 849 Testarossa.

Unlike its predecessor from the 1980s, which packed a naturally aspirated V12, this 21st-century iteration instead features a plug-in-hybrid (PHEV) powertrain from the Ferrari SF90 Stradale, which the 849 Testarossa replaces in Ferrari’s lineup.

The new 849 Testarossa’s powertrain is an evolution of the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) system from the SF90, featuring the familiar F154 4.0-litre V8 engine, but here updated with the largest turbochargers Ferrari has ever fitted to a production car.

Together with three electric motors, the 849 Testarossa’s hybrid mill packs a total output of 1,050 hp. To achieve this, the 4.0-litre V8 engine has been extensively reworked with revised cylinder heads, a new engine block, different exhaust manifolds, new intake plenums, titanium fasteners, an updated valvetrain, and a new fuel rail.

Combined with the new turbochargers, these modifications squeeze 830 hp and 842 Nm of torque from the V8 engine alone—a significant jump from the SF90’s 780 hp and 800 Nm.

This is paired to three electric motors that add another 220 hp. Channelled through an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, this allows the car to hit 0-100 km/h in under 2.3 seconds and 0-200 km/h in a blistering 6.35 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 330 km/h.

Deserving of numbers like that, the Ferrari 849 Testarossa certainly looks the part, too. Offered either as a coupe or a convertible from the get-go, Ferrari states that the design is inspired by a mix of aeronautics and its 1970s Sports Prototypes – but interestingly, not the original Testarossa from before.

The influence of one car in particular, the Ferrari 512 S race car, is especially clear in the rear design of the new 849 Testarossa. This is most evident in the 849 Testarossa’s full-width rear diffuser, which is flanked by two fixed twin spoilers that sandwich an active rear wing which generates 100 kg of downforce at 250 km/h.

At the front, the supercar adopts the same ‘black screen’ grille seen on the Ferrari 12Cilindri, creating a look that modernises the original Testarossa’s iconic face.

Inside, you’ll find an interior that is inspired by the Ferrari F80, most notably in the centre console housing the unique gear levers. There’s also a new steering wheel with mechanical buttons for controlling the infotainment based on Ferrari’s “Human Machine Interface” (HMI) system, as well as the engine start button, which Ferrari emphasises.

Of course, extensive personalisation options will be available. Ferrari has created two bespoke colours for the 849 Testarossa: ‘Rosso Fiammante,’ a new take on the classic Rosso Corsa, and ‘Giallo Ambra,’ described as an intense, warm yellow with reddish hues. Several new designs for the 20-inch alloy wheels will also be offered. For the interior, a new Alcantara trim called ‘Giallo Siena’ is available, designed to perfectly match the Giallo Ambra paint.

For owners who feel the standard 849 Testarossa is too tame, Ferrari will also offer the 849 Testarossa in Assetto Fiorano trim. This track-focused trim starts with a significant weight reduction of 48 kg that drops the dry weight to just 1,522 kg, thanks to new lightweight tubular seats and other modifications.

The car’s aerodynamics are also made more aggressive, with additional vortex generators and two rear spoilers replacing the standard twin tail – which looks like the setup found on the track-only Ferrari Enzo FXX K – to create more downforce, which Ferrari says is thrice more than the standard 849 Testarossa manages to produce.

To complete the transformation, the package also includes significantly stiffer suspension for sharper handling. The track-focused look is topped off with an exclusive livery, featuring a signature racing stripe available in Bianco Cervino and Rosso Corsa hues.

Pricing for the all-new Ferrari 849 Testarossa starts at EUR460,000 (approx. RM2.27 million) for the coupe and EUR500,000 (approx. RM2.46 million) for the convertible, with fortunate buyers now able to place their pre-orders.
