Buying your first EV? Here are the top 10 EVs with the cheapest road tax in Malaysia


Thinking of buying your first electric vehicle (EV) but worried about potentially paying expensive road tax? Well, you can stop worrying now as the Malaysian Ministry of Transport (MoT) has announced the new EV road tax calculation that will be effective starting January 2026, and it is about 70% cheaper than the outgoing calculation.

Just in case you didn’t know, the new EV road tax calculation is based on the power output of the EV in kW. Here is a table that simplifies all of that.

1. BYD Dolphin Standard Range: RM40

The BYD Dolphin Standard Range could be one of your best choices. It produces just 70 kW, contributing to its road tax price of just RM40. Mind you this is for the Dolphin Standard Range. Naturally, the more powerful Dolphin Extended Range comes with a higher road tax price.

2. Neta V: RM40

The Neta V also sports a road tax price of RM40, due to its electric motor that also puts out 70 kW. It is equipped with a 38.5 kWh battery pack that gives it an NEDC-rated range of 380 km.

3. Renault Zoe R110: RM60

The Renault Zoe might be an EV that you have long forgotten. Being among the earliest EVs to be sold here in Malaysia (and it’s still being sold), this entry-level-spec second-generation Zoe sports a front-mounted single electric motor setup that puts out 80 kW. This translates to its road tax price of just RM60.

4. GAC Aion Y Plus: RM70

Ranking just below the Renault Zoe R110 is the GAC Aion Y Plus. Having just launched recently at the Malaysia Autoshow 2024 just over two weeks ago, this EV SUV is powered by a front-mounted electric motor that makes 100 kW, contributing to its road tax price of RM70. Supplying power to the electric motor is a 63.2 kWh battery pack that gives the Aion Y Plus a NEDC-rated driving range of 490 km.

5. Hyundai Kona e-Lite & e-Plus: RM70

The Hyundai Kona e-Lite and e-Plus are both powered by the same front-mounted electric motor that produces 100 kW. That puts its road tax price at RM70.

The all-electric Kona e-Lite and e-Plus feature the same 39.2 kWh battery pack, allowing them to go as far as 305 km (WLTP). It is to be noted that the Kona Electric has been taken down from Hyundai Malaysia’s site. In fact, the second-generation model made its debut in late 2022.

6. Renault Zoe R135: RM70

The top-spec second-generation Zoe sports a front-mounted single electric motor setup that puts out 100 kW. This translates to its road tax price of just RM70. Like its more affordable sibling, it features a 52 kWh battery pack, giving it a driving range of 386 km.

7. GWM Ora Good Cat 400 Pro & 500 Ultra: RM80

The Ora Good Cat 400 Pro and 500 Ultra both sport road tax prices of RM80, due to the same front-mounted single electric motor that dishes out 105 kW. The Ora Good Cat 400 Pro sports a 47.8 kWh battery pack that gives it an NEDC-rated driving range of 400 km. The 500 Ultra on the other hand is packed with a 63.1 kWh battery pack, translating to an NEDC-rated driving range of 500 km.

8. Nissan Leaf: RM80

Yup, the Nissan Leaf is still on sale in Malaysia. Now in its second generation, this Japanese EV sports a front-mounted electric motor that pushes out 110 kW, contributing to its EV road tax price of just RM80. With a 40 kWh battery, the Leaf can carry you as far as 311 km (NEDC) on a single charge.

9. Hyundai Ioniq 6 Lite & Plus RWD: RM100

As their names suggest, the Hyundai Ioniq 6 Lite and Plus RWD sport a single-motor rear-wheel drive setup that pushes out 111 kW, contributing to their EV road tax prices of RM100. Thanks to a 53 kWh battery pack, the Ioniq 6 Lite and Plus RWD have the same WLTP-rated electric driving range of 429 km.

10. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Lite & Plus: RM120

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 Lite and Plus both sport the same single-motor rear-wheel drive setup that puts out 125 kW. This contributes to its road tax cost of RM120. Both variants are packed with the same 58 kWh battery pack. This translates to an electric driving range of 384 km.

…Well, let’s face it. Many of the EVs listed above aren’t the ones you will actually buy. So we have extended the list to give you 10 more EVs with affordable road taxes.

11. MG MG4 Standard: RM120

Next up is the MG4 Standard which EV road tax will also cost RM120. Positioned as the entry-level model to the MG4 family in Malaysia, it is powered by a rear-mounted single electric motor that makes 125 kW.

12. MG ZS EV: RM120

The MG ZS EV ranks 12 with a road tax price of RM120. It comes with a front-mounted single-electric motor that makes 130 kW. Having made its launch in Malaysia earlier this year, it rivals EV SUVs such as the BYD Atto 3 and Chery Omoda E5.

13. Mercedes-Benz EQA 250 AMG Line: RM140

Surprise, the Mercedes-Benz EQA 250 AMG Line has made it into the list and is in the top 15 list of EVs in Malaysia with the most affordable road taxes, proving that a luxury EV won’t necessarily come with hefty road tax costs. It sports a front-mounted single electric motor that puts out 140 kW, resulting in its road tax price of just RM140. Packing a 66.5 kWh battery pack, the EQA 250 AMG Line has an electric driving range of 429 km.

Sporting the same road tax price is the MINI Electric, which sports a front-mounted electric motor with 135 kW. However, it has been taken down from MINI Malaysia’s website.

14. BYD Dolphin Extended Range: RM160

The BYD Dolphin Extended Range’s EV road tax will cost you RM160. This is due to its front-mounted electric motor that also makes 150 kW.

The BYD Dolphin Extended Range is the top-spec variant of the two offered in Malaysia and costs RM100,530. It features a 60.48 kWh battery pack that gives you a WLTP-rated driving range of 427 km.

15. MG MG4 Luxury: RM160

Next up in the RM160 EV road tax range is the MG4 Luxury. The Luxury variant is the second most affordable one and it sports a 64 kWh battery pack that gives it a WLTP-rated range of 430 km.

16. BYD Atto 3: RM160

The BYD Atto 3 also has a road tax fee of RM160. This is due to its front-mounted electric motor making the same 150 kW. This applies to the newly launched 2024 BYD Atto 3, as well as the Atto 3 Extended Range and Standards Range previously offered. The 2024 BYD Atto 3 is only offered in a sole variant and packs a 49.92 Blade battery pack, giving the EV SUV a WLTP-rated range of 345 km.

17. Chery Omoda E5: RM160

Next up is the Chery Omoda E5, whose front motor also produces 150 kW of power, contributing to its road tax price of RM160. This Atto 3 rival comes with a 61 kWh battery pack which gives it a WLTP-rated driving range of 430 km. Despite making the same amount of power, the Omoda E5 costs you slightly less at RM146,800.

18. GWM Ora 07 Long Range Ultra: RM160

GWM’s most affordable EV sedan in Malaysia, the Ora 07 Long Range Ultra will also cost you RM160. Like the other cars mentioned above as well, the Ora 07 Long Range Ultra features a single-motor front-wheel drive setup that pushes out 150 kW. Thanks to an 83.5 kWh battery pack, this EV sedan can travel as far as 640 km (NEDC) on a single charge.

19. Kia Niro EV: RM160

Like the Renault Zoe, you might not remember the Kia Niro EV either. Having made its launch in Malaysia mid-last year, it packs a front-mounted single-electric motor that makes 150 kW. Its 64.8 kWh battery pack allows it to travel up to 460 km (WLTP) on a single charge.

20. BMW iX1 eDrive20 M Sport: RM160

Yep, you read it right, the BMW iX1 eDrive20 M Sport is among the EVs with the cheapest road tax in Malaysia. It is powered by a front-mounted single-motor making a total of 150 kW, contributing to its road tax price of RM160. The iX1 eDrive20 M Sport has a 64.8 kWh battery pack, giving it a WLTP-rated range of 475 km (WLTP). There is also the iX1 xDrive 30 which is more powerful.
