Gallery: 2024 BYD Seal Premium, RM180k – better & cheaper than the Tesla Model 3 RWD?

The BYD Seal made its launch in Malaysia in February this year, with two variants offered, namely the Premium and Performance. Featured in this gallery article is the entry-level Premium variant, which is priced at RM179,800, making it a rival to the likes of the Tesla Model 3 RWD and the GWM Ora 07 Long Range Ultra.

Sitting on BYD’s e-Platform 3.0, the Seal measures 4,800 mm in length, 1,875 mm in width, and 1,460 mm in height, and is underpinned by a 2,920 mm long wheelbase. This makes it about the same size as the Model 3 and Ora 07.

On the outside, the BYD Seal Premium pretty much shares the same exterior design as the Performance variant. The only obvious difference is the lack of the “3.8s” badge, which indicates the Performance variant’s 3.8-second-century sprint time. The Arctic Blue exterior colour option is also exclusive to the top-spec model only.

As standard, the BYD Seal Premium in Malaysia comes with LED headlights, LED daytime running lights (DRLs), LED taillights, and a set of 19-inch alloys. Aside from the Arctic Blue colour, which is available for the Performance variant only, the BYD Seal Premium can be had with Cosmos Black, Aurora White, or Atlantis Grey.

Powering the BYD Seal Premium in Malaysia is a single-motor rear-wheel drive (RWD) setup that puts out 313 hp and 360 Nm. This allows the all-electric sedan to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds, which is 2.1 seconds longer than what the Performance model is capable of.

Thanks to BYD’s in-house 82.5 kWh Blade LFP battery, the Seal Premium can carry you as far as 570 km (WLTP) on a single charge. When the battery runs out of juice, charging it back up can be done via AC charging at a maximum rate of 7 kW and DC charging at a maximum rate of 150 kW. The former can charge the battery from flat to full in 15.2 hours, while the latter can top up the battery from 10 to 80% in just 37 minutes.

Moving inside, you get genuine leather upholstery as standard, along with a 10.25-inch digital instrument display and a 15.6-inch rotatable touchscreen infotainment display that comes with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity. A head-up display (HUD) and two Qi wireless chargers are included here as well.

There is also an 8-way electrically adjustable driver seat which comes with memory function, and a 6-way electrically adjustable front passenger seat. The front seats are ventilated and heated.

Speaking of ventilation, the BYD Seal Premium in Malaysia is equipped with dual-zone air conditioning. To enjoy your tunes, there is the 12-speaker Dynaudio sound system.

In terms of safety, the BYD Seal Premium in Malaysia gets the brand’s advanced driver safety assistance systems (ADAS) suite as standard. Among the features thrown in consist of Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Automatic emergency braking system (AEB), Lane Detection Warning (LDW), Lane Departure Prevention System (LDP), and Emergency Lane Keeping System (ELKA).

Other active safety systems the BYD Seal Premium boasts include Predictive Collision Warning System (PCW), Rear Collision Warning System (RCW), Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR), Forward Crossing Traffic Alert (FCTA), and a 360-degree camera system. The only safety features the Premium variant loses out against the top-spec Performance are Electronic Child Lock and Intelligent Torque Adaption Control (ITAC), which is said to help to minimise or even eliminate skidding.
