BMW i5 Touring debuts – brand’s first EV wagon gets up to 560km of range

The BMW i5 Touring and the 5 Series Touring have finally been unveiled by BMW today. With the i5 Touring, BMW finally has an all-electric station wagon and it has been unveiled with two variants, mirroring its sedan counterpart. Like the sedan, petrol and plug-in hybrid versions of the 5 Series touring will also be available.

Upon its unveiling, BMW shared the specifications of the i5 eDrive40 Touring, i5 M60 xDrive Touring, 520d Touring, as well as the 520d xDrive Touring. The powertrain specifications of the two electric variants are the same as what you would find in the sedan i5.

With its front end already unveiled via the sedan, the real reveal here is the rear end of the i5/5 Series Touring. It is rather surprising to see that hasn’t taken much of a departure from the looks of the sedan 5 Series. The taillights are still horizontal and the roofline isn’t anything extreme.

The i5 eDrive40 Touring sports a single-motor rear-wheel drive setup, making 340 hp and 430 Nm. The eDrive40 Touring does the century sprint in 6.1 seconds onward to a limited top speed of 193 km/h. In the century sprint, it is only 0.1 seconds slower than its sedan counterpart.

Sharing the same battery as the eDrive40 sedan, the BMW i5 eDrive40 Touring has a shorter electric range of 560 km (WLTP) compared to the sedan’s 582 km. Like the sedan, it can handle 22 kW AC charging and 205 kW DC charging.

Up a tier is the i5 M60 xDrive which gets a dual-motor all-wheel drive setup. This system makes 601 hp and 820 Nm, a significant jump from the eDrive40 Touring. In the century sprint, it is also 0.1 seconds slower than its sedan counterpart at 3.9 seconds.

Like its lower-variant sibling, it also gets a bit less range from its sedan counterpart since it shares the same battery but carries a bit more weight and drag. The i5 M60 xDrive can manage 506 km (WLTP), which is 10 km less than its sedan counterpart.

Just like the sedan, the i5 Touring features the same interaction bar as well the twin curved display which runs on the latest BMW Operating System 8.5. As standard, the interior of the i5 Touring is fully vegan, in line with its renewable energy aspiration.

The i5 touring is likely not coming to Malaysia, but it sure is nice to see the wagon body style carried on even in the age of electrification. The unveiling of the 5 Series isn’t quite done yet as we are still anticipating the M5 sedan and the M5 Touring.
