Mercedes-Benz confirms 4 new entry-level cars based on MMA platform – Drops A-Class hatchback?

Unveiled over the recent weekend, the Mercedes-Benz Concept CLA Class not only previewed the future design of the brand’s entry-level segment cars. It also previewed 4 new cars by Mercedes-Benz that will be built on the same MMA platform that it is built on.

The 4 new models that will be built on the MMA platform are:

  • A 4-door coupe (most likely resembling the Concept CLA Class)
  • A shooting brake
  • 2 new “stunning” SUVs.

The MMA platform is perhaps the underpinning of the successor to the current entry-level generation which includes the A-Class sedan, A-Class hatchback, CLA, GLA, and the EQA. It also includes the B-Class, GLB, and the EQB.

Based on the teaser images shared by Mercedes-Benz and the confirmed 4 new models, it seems that the A-Class sedan and A-Class hatch are nowhere to be seen. As confirmed by Mercedes-Benz CEO, Ola Kaellenius in his LinkedIn post, “We [Mercedes-Benz] will introduce four new models developed from scratch on our new dedicated MMA architecture: a four-door coupé, a shooting brake, and two stunning SUVs”.

Although no further details have been shared regarding the 4 new MMA architecture-based cars, the Concept CLA Class has pretty much shown us what this new generation of Mercedes-Benz entry-level cars will be capable of.

For instance, a range of over 750 km is possible with a 12kWh/100km energy consumption rate, and the cars can regain 400 km of range in just 15 minutes of charging. Technologically, one significant improvement that the MMA platform brings is the 800V architecture. No production EVs by Mercedes-Benz use this architecture just yet.

The Mercedes-Benz Concept CLA Class is a fully electric vehicle and the upcoming 4 new MMA-based models will most likely be electric only as well.
