Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is a 640 hp, 868 Nm American V8 rocket

The Chevrolet Camaro is a car that needs no introduction. Every now and then, a unique edition finds its way to production, and it’s no different here with the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. The folks at General Motors said the ZL1 is “designed to excel at everything”, so let’s see what it’s really about.

This Camaro ZL1 is not as simple as swapping the Bumblebee image for a red hot, more focused machine. Instead, Chevrolet’s prime muscle car receives a huge dose of steroids in the arm, improving performance, refinement and track capabilities. Aerodynamically, it’s enhanced too with a larger lower grille, new hood with carbon-fiber inserts, front splitters and rear wing. The ZL1 also weighs 90kg less than its predecessor, thanks to a revised, lighter architecture.Chevy-camaro-zl1011 (5)

Underneath the hood lies a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 from the Corvette Z06 that shoots 640 hp and 868 Nm of mind bending torque. New to the Camaro is an all-new quick shifting 10-speed automatic gearbox, although purists get to opt for the six-speed manual gearbox. The new automatic, jointly developed by Ford and GM, will allow the supercharged V8 to remain in optimum revs during acceleration or while cornering.

The handling department is managed by Magnetic Ride suspension, electronic limited-slip differential and specially crafted Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar tyres. Brakes are supplied by Brembo – a set of six-pot 390mm two-piece rotors.Chevy-camaro-zl1011 (2)

GM is confident that with the Camaro ZL1, they have a car that can rival any sports coupe (think Cayman and you’re not too far off), but the only thing not revealed at this point is its pricing.
