BMW i8 Spyder confirmed for production, debuting in 2016

There’s no denying that BMW i8 plug-in hybrid makes environmental friendly cars sexy and desirable. One could have imagined having an i8 with its roof cut off is the equivalent of dating a gorgeous Victoria Secret model with way lesser clothes. Well, the wait is no more, because the Bavarian giant has finally confirmed production for the BMW i8 Spyder.

As reported in German newspaper Handelsblatt, BMW CEO Harald Krüger commented that the i8 Spyder is set to arrive in time for BMW’s centennial celebrations next year. Apart from the removable roof panels, BMW retains the majority of the i8 coupe’s characteristics. That said, expect this sexy spyder to be powered by the similar 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine and an electric motor, coupled with a six-speed automatic transmission.bmw-i8-spyder6

For those who needs some refresher on the i8 Coupe, the car – with a total output of 362 hp and 570 Nm – is capable of hitting 0 – 100km/h in 4.4secs. Rumours say the German automaker is working on the 2.0-liter powertrain capable of 450hp.

The all-wheel driven i8 was launched in Malaysia earlier in April for a cool RM1.2million. With the emergence of the i showroom in Kuala Lumpur, we might see the topless i8 in our shores by 2017.
