Second generation Audi R8 teased, features high-tech laser + LED headlights

Teased here under the wraps ahead of the upcoming Geneva Motor Show is the all-new Audi R8. But just like the wraps have shown, we know nothing much the second generation mid-engine supercar, but we do know that the headlights encapsulate the Ingolstadt-based premium carmaker’s latest lighting technology.

As standard, the R8’s headlights will feature exactly 37 LEDs per headlight, making for a total of 74 LEDs to light up the way ahead. The laser lighting technology (high beam only) however, is optional. According to Audi, laser high-beams achieve nearly twice the lighting range compared to LEDs.

It works pretty similarly to BMW’s M4 Coupe Iconic Lights. Each headlight is fitted with a single laser module that operates with four high-intensity diodes firing blue-light laser beams in unison. A phosphor converter will then transform this intense blue light into pure white light.

This technology first debuted in the brand’s R18 e-tron Le Mans race car, then it found its way into the limited edition Audi R8 LMX last year. More details of the new Audi R8 will be revealed as soon as this month’s end, so be sure to keep an eye out for the latest updates here!
