Malaysia will be getting the all-new, 9th generation 2012 Honda Civic around July this year. It’s amazing to see that the 8th generation Civic is still looking contemporary with no signs of aging even after being on the market for 6 years. Albeit this fact, an all-new model is hitting our market to keep Honda’s sales in the C-segment market strong when the Koreans are coming up at a rapid rate.

Our version of Civic will be almost identical to what the Thailand market has. Yes, the overall exterior design might not be as photogenic or appealing as the outgoing model, but you get improved aerodynamic (also means improved fuel consumption) in return. Honda followed the downsizing trend by reducing the wheelbase of the Civic by 30mm from the outgoing model to 2670mm. Honda ensured that the all-new Civic is not skimmed in terms of cabin space, but is when it comes to the total weight of the car.

There will be three variants available – 1.8L, 2.0L and 2.0L Navi. Performance wise, the 1.8L’s engine produces 130hp @ 6500rpm and 174Nm of torque @ 4300rpm, mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission. The more powerful 2.0L VTEC mill churns out 153hp @ 6500rpm and 190Nm of torque @ 4300rpm.

The 2.0L will get features like electric-powered driver seat, smart entry, push-start button, cruise control, headlight auto-off timer and side airbags while the 1.8L has none. 2.0L Navi will have an extra touchscreen LCD, navigation system (justified the ‘Navi’ name tag), reverse camera and Bluetooth ability for phone. However, there might be some changes on the specification and equipment list since the Civic is not launched yet in Malaysia.

Are you looking forward to see the 9th gen Civic on the road? Even though the all-new Civic’s design is not as spectacular as its predecessor, I believe it’s still one of the best choices in C-segment sedan market for its handling and performance.
