Next-gen Porsche Cayman and Boxster models to use iconic 718 moniker

There’ll be new generations of Cayman and Boxster models that will bear the “718” moniker, paying homage the company’s iconic sports car from the same year our country gained its independence. Also, the new Cayman and Boxster will receive new forced induction engines, the first for both models, after the facelifted 911.

Porsche claims that both models will be known as 718 Cayman and 718 Boxster; both featuring more “visual and technical” similarities than before. That said, the Boxster will carry a slightly higher pricetag compared to the Cayman couple.porsche 718

For the uninitiated, the 718 was one of Porsche’s most important open-cockpit sports car that raced and won Targa Florio and Le Mans. The company referred the 718 as “a reference to the ground-breaking sports car of this type during 1957, which enjoyed much success in renowned car races of the period.”

Also reported was that the new Cayman and Boxster will lose the existing 2.7-litre and 3.4-litre flat-six engines for a single turbocharged 2.0-litre flat four. The standard version gets 240 hp while the S version gets an additional 60 hp – all powered by the same 2.0-litre engine.

Porsche has yet to announce any firm dates on the revealing of these new models. Instead, they have hinted that both cars will be introduced sometime in 2016.

Closer to home, the GTS variants for both Cayman and Boxster models were just launched by Porsche Malaysia for the local market back in July this year. If these aren’t hardcore enough for you, there’s always the RM840k Cayman GT4! If you’re considering to get one, it’s now or never, because the next Cayman may just come with an engine that’ll cost you RM380 on road tax per annum.
