Exterior
Keeping to the R tradition, the Mk7 R has a more aggressive face over the GTI. Sharper features throughout the front and the rear differentiates it from the regular Golf model. The Golf R is also with quad exhaust pipes, smoked LED tail lights, adaptive bi-xenon front headlights with DRLs.
The vanilla Golf R rims are 18″ in size, wrapped with 225/40 BridgeStone Potenzas, while the 5-door model gets 19″ rims, wrapped in 235/35 BridgeStone Potenzas. Both variants have the same rim design called “Cadiz“.
Interior
The pricier 5-door variant gets the Tech Pack as standard, and adds extra toys like a 12-way electrially adjustable driver’s seat, cruise control, 8″ TFT Touchscreen display with navigation, Dynamic Chassis Control, ECO Function, Vienna leather seats and a panoramic sunroof. Of course, the best part is the Tech Pack also adds another 10 more horses.
Unlike the Golf GTI’s red themed interior, the Golf R has a cooler looking blue theme instead like blue needles for the meters. Other than that, the R has a flat bottomed leather steering wheel and carbon fibre like trim. The Golf R also gets a R leather gear knob and R badged seats.
Performance
Engine wise, both variants are powered by a newly designed 2.0TSI engine producing 280hp (290hp with Tech Pack) and 380Nm of torque. Power is transferred to the wheels via a 6-speed DSG gearbox. The Golf R is capable of sprinting from 0-100km/h in 5 seconds. When driven flat out, the Golf R will top out at 250km/h.
Also new is Volkswagen’s 4Motion AWD system, which is already in its 5th generation. The 4Motion system is capable of splitting torque between front and rear wheels from 10:90 and 90:10. Another addition to the Golf R is the XDS+ differentials up front and behind. The GTI only had the XDS+ diffs up front.
Safety
Safety wise, the Golf R scored a full 5 stars in the Euro NCAP crash test. Other than the strong structure, the Golf R keeps the driver and occupants safe with 7 airbags, ABS, EBD, Stability Control and ISOFIX mount. The passenger’s airbag can also be manually disabled, when the need arises.
What else…
Price starts from RM245,888 for the 3-door variant, while the Tech Pack equipped 5-door variant tops out at RM285,888. Prices quoted here are without insurance. Like all Volkswagen models, the Golf R also benefits from VGM’s 5-year warranty coverage.
