BMW shows the 2015 BMW X6 F16 to the world [+Video]

You know this was coming. With the launch of the F15 X5, an X6 will eventually be introduced to the consumers. End of this year that is. This second-generation X6 codenamed F16 follows the same recipe as the previous X6, which looks like a more athletic version of the vehicle it is based on, the X5.

The shape is instantly recognisable as an X6 Sports Activity Coupe, but the new car has grown a little bit taller, a wee bit wider, and a tiny bit longer. Standing at 1702mm tall, the new X6 is 12mm taller than the predecessor, and at 1989mm wide it’s 6mm wider than before. It is also 32mm longer at 4909mm, but the wheelbase is retained at 2933mm.

Even though it has grown in every direction, the new X6 is up to 40kg lighter. Three variants will be available at launch in December namely xDrive50i, xDrive30d, and M50d; with combined fuel consumption at 9.7 – 6.0 l/100 km. The petrol xDrive50i is powered by a 4395cc V8 belting out 450hp and 650Nm of torque and it sprints from 0-100 km/h in 4.8seconds.

The remaining two diesels are the ‘base’ 2993cc inline-6 with 258hp and 560Nm of torque that powers the xDrive30d, and another inline-6 2993cc but with triple turbo that generates 381hp and 740Nm of torque in the M50d. 0-100 km/h time is 6.7 seconds for the xDrive30d and 5.2 seconds for the M50d.

Another two variants will be added to the range later next year, a petrol xDrive35i and a diesel xDrive40d. All variants are using the infamous eight-speed automatic transmission from ZF and every new X6 is equipped with the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system.

Buyers will get to choose different suspension setups on the new X6. Dynamic adaptive suspension package highlights the X6’s sporty handling attributes with Dynamic Performance Control together with Dynamic Drive active roll stabilisation. Comfort adaptive suspension package equips the X6 with rear air suspension coupled with Dynamic Damper Control while the Professional adaptive suspension package combines both features from both Comfort and Dynamic. Adaptive M suspension is standard on the M50d but can also be specified on all X6.

The interior follows the X5 albeit more cocooning, especially in the back. It’s still practical though, the boot capacity is 580 litres and the rear seats split and fold 40:20:40. Up front the dashboard is lifted from the X5, with black-panel instrument cluster and up to 10.25 inch display screen controlled via the iDrive toggle in the center console. Optional Navigation System Professional with Touch Controller can be specified, along with Bang & Olufsen high-end surround-sound system and Rear Entertainment System Professional.

In terms of safety, the X6 includes airbags in front and side, and even head airbags for front and rear seats. The X6 also comes with active bonnet system that raises the bonnet upon impact with pedestrian.

The launch date is set to be in December 2014, so expect the F16 X6 to arrive here in Malaysia by next year.
