You’ll soon be able to watch videos on Apple CarPlay

Apple announced the usual array of updates for iOS 27 at WWDC 2026, but it is the automotive side of things that actually caught our attention. The tech company revealed that Apple CarPlay is getting a host of major changes, meaning you will soon be able to watch videos directly on your car’s display.

Much like Google’s recent announcement that Android Auto will feature a similar upgrade, video playback only works when the car is parked and stationary for obvious safety reasons, with Apple noting this is quite useful when your car is at the airport or charging.

Enabled via AirPlay on the iPhone, the feature functions exclusively on supported vehicles, meaning the upgrade is strictly dependent on your car’s physical hardware rather than just the software.

Additionally, Apple also announced a revamped, smarter version of its assistant called Siri AI on CarPlay. This is available for users of the iPhone 15 Pro or newer devices, meaning drivers using older phones are completely out of luck. Reportedly, Siri AI is smart enough now to get an answer immediately when you ask which trailhead your friend suggested, as the assistant pulls information directly from your text messages to provide a response tailored to your personal context.

Other new improvements made to CarPlay include audio scrubbing within CarPlay’s Now Playing interface, improved GPS accuracy and navigation heading, a mini-player for audio within apps and improved wireless CarPlay reliability.

The newly announced CarPlay features will require an iPhone running iOS 27, which is currently available as a developer beta. A public beta will follow in July, before the polished version finally rolls out in September to all users with a compatible iPhone.
