Apparently the biggest and the most competitive segment in Malaysia motoring is undoubtly the B segment cars. Toyota has been leading the segment pretty much comfortably with the Toyota Vios. However it faced tough competition from rivals like the arch rival Honda City and upcoming ones like Nissan Almera, Chevrolet Sonic, Volkswagen Polo sedan and so on. Since the current generation of Vios has debut since 2006-2007, it is the matter of time the new generation of Vios should come to our shores.
Lately, one Chinese automotive portal, Sohu Autos, has found some new leaked images of what supposed to be the next generation of the new Toyota Vios. It is the matter of time the new Vios will be introduced since the hatchback equivalent, the Yaris, was released worldwide earlier this year.
By the looks of it the image department will be edgier and striking compared to the outgoing one which many thinks it’s unattractive. From the current design language from the new RAV4 and Auris, we expect the new Vios to be much handsome than the outgoing one. Also interestingly Toyota decided to ditch the middle console cluster and went back into the conventional location. As current Toyota CEO, Akio Toyoda, insist the new Toyota cars to be more fun to drive, there could be some improvements on the ride and handling department,as many remember the outgoing one is as interesting as watching paint dry while pushing into corners.
However no word on the engine and drivetrain to be used on the new Vios and the current 1.5CC 1NZ-FE with 4 speed auto gearbox has been used without problems in the past two generations of Vios. It will be massively disappointing if the current engines and gearbox retained but with the new dual VVTI introduced in many of Toyota’s lineup, there a likelyhood a new engine with dual VVTI might be introduced, and perhaps a CVT gearbox will replace the archaic 4 speed auto gearbox.
It is expected that the new Vios will be launched in Asian countries, including Malaysia, sometime in 2013. The Vios, also known as the Yaris sedan in the United States, might be bought into the United States sometime next year as well. Should Toyota get the new Vios right, this might cement Toyota’s strength in the B segment for many years to come.
