Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems, KERS is back in this year’s Formula One season. Red Bull team has come up with this awesome video explaining how KERS works.
In simple terms, KERS works like a “Boost” button in a PS3 racing game. It is a battery-based system that converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. Energy is lost when a driver brakes as it’s converted to heat. But instead of wasting the energy, the electrons are transferred from the brakes and stored in a battery pack. With a push of a button, the driver gets an additional 80 horsepower. This extra horses can go on continuously for about 6.6 seconds.
Mark Webber will explain further in the video below. New adjustable rear wing also explained.
