Proton is set to make a come back in this year’s Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship (BTCC). The Welch Motorsport team has announced plans to enter a Next Generation Touring Car-specification version of Proton’s Gen-2 model in the second half of this year’s BTCC.

The team principal John Welch mentioned they will be using the booted version of the Gen-2 (which in Malaysia and Australia it’s called “Proton Persona” and “Proton Gen-2 Persona” in UK). So basically it’s a Proton Persona, and it will be driven by his 27-year-old son Daniel. However, this car will only make its debut in the second half of the season around August.

According to Welch, the car will be using TOCA’s unbranded turbocharged NGTC (Next Generation Touring Car) engine.

Proton last competed in the BTCC in 2004 when Shaun Watson-Smith and Farique Hairuman drove the Proton Impian (Proton Waja) models.
