KLIMS18: It’s irresistible to take a second look at the striking new Mitsubishi Triton!

Fresh from its global unveiling in Bangkok, Thailand recently, Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM) has announced that the updated pick-up will be launched early next year, with five different variants available.

The pick-up, which will be imported from Thailand as a CBU unit, will be available for viewing at the 2018 Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show. Prices have been set to begin from RM 100k to RM 140k for the Peninsula Malaysia region.

While it may only be a facelift, changes to the new Triton have been vast. Not only does it sport a new, more aggressive exterior, it has also been enhanced mechanically, with new overall dimensions.

As you can tell, the Triton has been given a completely new face, sporting Mitsubishi Motor’s new Dynamic Shield design language, with slimmer headlamps positioned 700 mm off the ground so they wouldn’t be submerged and malfunction in extreme weather conditions.

Its taillights are also of a completely new design, with four colours available – Sterling Silver, Black Mica, White Diamond and Graphite Grey Metallic.

Power still comes from the same 2.4-litre MIVEC turbo diesel engine with Variable Valve Timing and Variable Geometry Turbo (VGT) with 181 hp and 430 Nm but is now paired to a new, smoother 6-speed transmission as opposed to the previous 5-speed unit.

Unlike the old Triton, which has already proven that pick-ups can be refine, larger rear dampers have been adopted on the new model for even better damping. The Triton’s brakes have also been upgraded, with larger calipers and brake discs at the front.

As for size, the new Triton is 10mm longer, from 5,280mm to 5,290mm and is 15kg lighter compared to the current model, with the highest spec (at global launch) weighing 1,815 kg compared to the current VGT Athlete model we have locally.

The new Triton is now also available with a whole list of driver assistance systems, possibly only for the higher spec models, that includes orward Collision Mitigation (FCM), Blind Spot Warning, Lane Change Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA).

It also comes with the Ultrasonic Misacceleration Mitigation System (UMS) which essentially ensures that you’d never reverse or drive into a wall/car by accident. It’s also equipped Hill Descent Control and a “Multi-Around Monitor” that displays a 360-degree view of the car.

In conjunction with the imminent arrival of the new Triton, Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia authorised dealers will be taking pre-launch bookings from now. The first 1,000 to book and register a new Triton will receive a limited edition THULE luggage bag worth RM 2,000.

If you need help deciding, head on over to any of these locations where the new Triton will be on display from 7th of December 2018 to 20th of January 2019.
