Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid is the safest car ASEAN NCAP has tested so far [+Video]

The Hyundai Ioniq is arguably one of the best deals Malaysian consumers have come across in a long time. It’s frugal, packed with features and decently priced thanks to local hybrid assembly incentives.

In Europe, the Ioniq is awarded 5-Star crash safety rating in the Euro NCAP but recently, ASEAN NCAP subjected the hatchback through its tests and yielded the same results. Not only that, it is also the safest car ASEAN NCAP has ever tested with an overall score of 91.98 out of 100.

The model tested was the Ioniq Hybrid 1.6 HEV made for Singapore and Malaysia market which comes equipped with seven-airbags, ABS, Electronic Stability Control, Vehicle Stability Management, ISOFIX mounting points and a full suite of driver assist systems (available as option for MY market) – Autonomous Emergency Braking, Lane Keep Assist, Lane Departure Warning System, Blind Spot Detection and Adaptive Cruise Control.

For Adult Occupant Protection, the Ioniq fared a total score of 33.36 (out of 36) and for Child Occupant Protection it scored 42.1 (out of 49). Thanks to its incredible suite of safety features, naturally the Ioniq scored a near perfect score for Safety Assist with 17.40 points out of the maximum 18 points. This gives the Ioniq an overall weighted score of 91.98 points.

In Malaysia, Hyundai Sime Darby Malaysia (HSDM) has two variants of the Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid 1.6 on sale: HEV and HEV Plus, priced at RM103k and RM114k respectively. In the words of our former editor “Many industry colleagues agreed with surety that the Ioniq was possibly – and still is – the best deal ever to be presented in the Malaysian car-buying scene within the last decade. Perhaps, it may even be the closest thing to being the perfect, affordable city car.”
