Volkswagen Golf R gets Performance Pack, derestricted top speed & more!

Following the introduction of the “R-Performance Pack” for the Volkswagen Golf R MK 7.5 couple months back, Volkswagen has introduced yet another performance upgrade for its hot hatch – the Performance Pack. The new upgrade is only available for DSG equipped Golf R facelift.

For £2,300 (RM12.6k), you get new visual bits of 19-inch Spielberg alloy wheels and a rear spoiler (hatchback only). The “R-Performance” brake system that debuted on the “R-Performance Pack” cuts overall weight by 2 kgs and adds new high-performance brake pads with superior hot braking response to ensure consistent bite during track outings as well as silver brake callipers with R-lettering.

The electronically restricted top speed of 250 km/h has been lifted, allowing the Golf R hatchback to hit 267 km/h on the hatchback and 270 km/h on the estate body. Volkswagen attributes the lower top speed on the hatch to the new functional rear spoiler that adds 20 kg more downforce. Mechanically, it retains the EA888 2.0-litre turbocharged four-potter that churns out 306 hp and 400 Nm of torque paired to a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch.

Additionally, customers can now order the Akrapovic titanium exhaust system ala carte from factory for £2,975 (RM16k). The new exhaust system saves 7 kg on the rear axles and features valve control technology that opens and closes the valves according to the car’s Driving Mode Selection – Eco Normal, Sport and Race.

The Volkswagen Golf R facelift has been a familiar sighting in other markets but is still missing from our local scene. Earlier this year, Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) hinted that the Golf facelift range was supposed to arrive on our shores this year. But looking at the calendar, we might have to wait till 2018 for it to make its local debut.
