Our nation’s largest car manufacturer, Perodua, set themselves a sales target of 202,000 cars for 2017 and the company has just released their sales figures for the first nine months of 2017 with 151,600 units sold – a marginal increase of 0.5 percent increase from the same period last year. Yet, Perodua quotes that it’s “cautiously optimistic” for the final quarter of the year and maintains its 202k unit sales target.

The marginal growth sees Perodua models maintaining its best-seller position in their respective category. Year-to-date, the most popular model remains the Axia with 48,700 units sold followed closely by the Myvi. Let’s take a look at the breakdown:

  1. Perodua Axia – 48,700 units
  2. Perodua Myvi – 42,000 units
  3. Perodua Bezza – 39,800 units
  4. Perodua Alza – 21,400 units

President and Chief Executive Officer of Perodua, Datuk (Dr) Aminar Rashid Salleh said, “The fourth quarter is expected to be challenging but we believe that we can sustain our sales momentum and are cautiously optimistic in meeting our earlier set target of 202,000 vehicles by the end of 2017”

He added that the main challenges include stricter approvals for hire-purchase loans and intense competition from other auto brands.

Perodua has serviced 1.58 million for the first 9 months, an increase of 4.6 percent compared to the same period last year. Production volume saw a reduction of 3.8 percent to 147,900 vehicles, attributed to the increased planned production in Q4 of 2016 in response to the expected higher exchange rate in Q1 of 2017.
